Puttur: Interstate drug peddling gang arrested; MDMA worth Rs 5.38 lac seized

Puttur, Feb 20: In a major operation against the interstate drug trade, the Puttur rural police arrested three persons for illegally transporting MDMA from Puttur towards Sullia on February 18.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammed Ajmal C alias Ajju (30) from Kozhikode, Kerala; Ismail (28) from Wayanad district, Kerala; and Shamsheer (27) from Kozhikode, Kerala.

Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the vehicle and recovered 53.58 grams of the banned MDMA, valued at approximately Rs 5,38,800. The police also seized a car, a lethal weapon (talwar), mobile phones, and cash amounting to Rs 10,000 from their possession.

A case has been registered at the Puttur rural police station under Sections 8(C), 22(C), and 29 of the NDPS Act 1985, as well as Section 25(1B)(B) of the Arms Act.

Investigations revealed that the accused were involved in supplying narcotics across Kerala, Goa, and Karnataka. Several cases have already been registered against them in Kozhikode, Kannur, and Wayanad districts, where they were reportedly absconding. Furthermore, Mohammed Ajmal is a prime accused in a recent NDPS case registered at the Puttur rural station, while Ismail faces drug trafficking charges in Kozhikode.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Puttur sub-division deputy superintendent of police Pramod Kumar, Puttur rural station in-charge inspector Sunil Kumar, and district DSB inspector Nanda Kumar. The team also included sub-inspectors Gunapala and Sushma J Bhandari, along with personnel from the special squad and station staff.
