Srinivas University hosts guest talk on perception and cognitive processes at Mukka campus

Mangaluru, Feb 21: The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, Institute of Management and Commerce, Srinivas University, organised a guest talk on the topic “Perception: Concept, types, errors in perception, principles of organisation” on February 16 at the Srinivas University, Mukka campus.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr Venkatesh S Amin, dean, Institute of Management and Commerce, and Prof Joyson Prenky Cardoza, head, department of Social Sciences and Humanities. The resource person for the session was Prof S Seethalaxmi, assistant professor, department of BCom, Institute of Management and Commerce, Srinivas University.

The session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the concept of perception and its significance in human behaviour and everyday life. The resource person explained the meaning and nature of perception and highlighted how individuals interpret and make sense of sensory information. She elaborated on the different types of perception, such as visual, auditory, and social perception, and discussed their relevance in academic, professional, and social contexts.

Further, the speaker discussed common errors in perception, including illusion, hallucination, stereotyping, and perceptual bias, with suitable real-life examples to help students understand how misinterpretation can influence behaviour and decision-making. She also explained the principles of perceptual organisation, such as figure-ground, proximity, similarity, continuity, and closure (Gestalt principles), and emphasized how these principles help individuals organise and interpret stimuli in a meaningful way.

The session was highly informative and interactive, enabling students to relate theoretical concepts of perception to real-life situations.

The programme was graced by the presence of Dr Laveena Dmello, professor and Dr Stutima Bassista, assistant professor, and Prof Ranjith Bhat, assistant professor, department of Social Sciences and Humanities, Srinivas University. The guest talk was organised as part of the guest talk series for the academic year, and first-year MSW students actively participated in the programme.

The session was well appreciated by the students as it provided valuable academic insights into perception, cognitive processes, and behavioural understanding relevant to their course of study.

The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, followed by a vote of thanks. The department expressed its sincere gratitude to the resource person and all the participants for making the session insightful and successful.
