Udupi, Feb 27: In a disturbing incident at the Malpe fishing harbour, a fish auctioneer was allegedly assaulted by a trader during a trade dispute.

According to the FIR filed at the Malpe police station, the victim, Sheik Ayyub (52), works as a professional fish auctioneer at the Malpe port. On February 26, while he was conducting a routine auction for a catch brought to him by a young worker, a trader identified as Mithun Karkera arrived at the scene.

Karkera reportedly objected to the auction, claiming ownership of the fish. The confrontation escalated as Karkera allegedly assaulted Sheik Ayyub, causing physical injuries, and subjected him to verbal abuse.

Following the incident, Sheik Ayyub lodged a formal complaint at the Malpe police station.

Several organisations, including Sahabalve, CPI(M), and the Welfare Party of India, have strongly condemned the assault and urged the authorities to take strict legal action against the accused. Local activists pointed out that many small-scale fish auctioneers and labourers at the Malpe harbour frequently face exploitation and intimidation by influential traders and boat owners.

The police are currently investigating the matter.
