Mangaluru, Mar 2: A man attempted suicide by jumping into the river from the Netravati bridge, which has been identified as a suicide point, but was rescued by fishermen who were engaged in fishing in the river and given primary treatment.

The incident occurred on Sunday when an elderly resident of Pumpwell Naguri reportedly jumped into the river from the bridge. Fishermen who were fishing below immediately jumped into the river, pulled the man into their boat and later admitted him to a hospital for primary treatment.

It may be recalled that the protective barricade installed on the Netravati bridge had been damaged in a vehicle accident just a few days ago. Despite spending lacs of rupees to construct the barricade, the departments concerned had not taken steps to repair it. Fishermen suspect that the man may have jumped from the same damaged portion.

Fishermen Jamal, Idinabba and Maiyyadi rescued the man who attempted suicide. Solar Hanif and Ullal police station SI were also present.
