Hyderabad, Mar 9: The India women's national field hockey team began their campaign at the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers with an impressive 4–0 victory over Uruguay women's national field hockey team in Hyderabad on Sunday.
In his first major assignment since returning as head coach, Sjoerd Marijne said before the match that he was curious to see how the team would perform after limited preparation. The performance would have pleased the Dutch coach, as several young players making their senior debuts played key roles in the victory.

Goals from Sunelita Toppo (21’), Ishika (40’), Lalremsiami (49’), and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58’) ensured a comfortable win for India.
India dominated possession early in the match and created chances through players such as Navneet Kaur and Neha Goyal, though they struggled initially to convert opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the second quarter from a penalty corner variation. Debutant Annu attempted a drag-flick, which eventually deflected into the goal off Sunelita Toppo to give India the lead.
Uruguay had a chance late in the first half from a penalty corner, but experienced defender Sushila Chanu blocked the shot to keep India ahead.
India doubled their advantage in the third quarter when Ishika swept the ball into the net after a smart pass from Sakshi Rana.
The pressure continued as Lalremsiami added the third goal after receiving a precise pass from Rutuja Pisal. Captain Salima Tete later drove through midfield and set up Rutuja, who dribbled into the circle and fired a low shot to complete the scoring.
India will next face Scotland women's national field hockey team on Monday in what could prove to be a decisive match in Pool B of the qualifiers.
