Mumbai, Mar 15: Actor Madhu Malhotra, known for lip-syncing the soulful song “Lambi Judaai” in the 1983 blockbuster Hero, passed away in Mumbai on Friday, according to trade magazine Film Information. She was 71.

Directed by Subhash Ghai, Hero (1983) featured several chartbusters such as the songs “Tu Mera Jaanu Hai”, “Pyar Karne Wale Kabhi Darte Nahi” and “Ding Dong Baby Sing a Song”. However, the melancholic track “Lambi Judaai”, rendered by Pakistani folk singer Reshma, went on to become a timeless favourite. Madhu Malhotra, dressed in a colourful gypsy outfit, lip-synced the emotional number on screen.

Madhu was a familiar face in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in over 100 films, mostly in supporting and minor roles. She was also among the leading ladies in the multi-starrer hit Satte Pe Satta, where she was paired with comic actor Paintal.

She frequently appeared in films directed by Subhash Ghai, making cameo appearances in movies such as Vishwanath, Karz and Vidhaata. She was also seen in horror films directed by Mohan Bhakri, including Khooni Murda (1989) and Roohani Taqat (1991).

Many moviegoers also remember her as the cheerful girl wearing a beach hat in the song “Mausam Mastana”. Filmmaker Anil Sharma recalled working with her in his film Shradhanjali.

“She had a small role in my film Shradhanjali. She was a thorough professional,” Sharma said.
