Failed thrice, rose stronger: IIT graduate Abhishek Singh secures AIR 78 in UPSC 2024

Daijiworld Media Network - Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, Apr 1: In a world where one failure can derail dreams, Abhishek Singh’s story stands as a powerful reminder that perseverance pays off. A native of Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, and an alumnus of IIT Hyderabad, Abhishek failed three times in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination. However, in his fourth attempt in UPSC 2024, he cracked the prestigious exam with an All India Rank of 78.

Far from being disheartened by repeated setbacks, Singh returned to the drawing board each time, refining his approach with calm determination. Consistency and hard work carried him through the darkest days, reflecting the long and emotionally demanding road to success.

Though Singh graduated in engineering from IIT Hyderabad, he was never interested in corporate careers or coding jobs. His inclination was always towards public service, and that conviction became the foundation of his UPSC journey, driven more by purpose than profession.

His preparation followed a methodical strategy—relying on standard sources, staying focused on the syllabus, and consistently analysing Previous Year Questions. This approach helped him clearly understand the demands of the examination and stay aligned with its expectations.

According to Singh, UPSC is not an exam for rote learners. It tests retention, clarity, and precision. To master answer writing, he dedicated six months to focused practice, which proved crucial during the Mains stage. Writing daily not only improved his performance but also boosted his confidence.

Ahead of his fourth attempt, Singh made a bold and strategic shift by changing his optional subject from Civil Engineering to Anthropology. This decision proved to be a turning point, significantly improving his score. He secured 298 marks in Anthropology, which played a decisive role in achieving a top-100 rank.

Despite facing academic failures, Singh also dealt with multiple health issues and emotional struggles. Instead of giving in, he found strength through the support of his parents and friends, along with Vipassana meditation, which helped him remain mentally balanced and focused. The UPSC journey, for him, became a transformative experience that shaped him into a better individual.

As he approached the personality test stage, Singh relied on structured mentorship to prepare effectively. Mock interview sessions helped him stay composed, confident, and clear-headed. Even on the day of the actual interview, guidance from his mentor helped him overcome anxiety and perform steadily.

As he steps into a career in public service, Singh shares a grounded message for aspirants—believe in yourself, stay consistent, remain humble, and enjoy the journey. He emphasizes that while UPSC demands dedication, one should not attach their entire identity to the exam. Hard work and luck both matter, but so does the ability to pause, reflect, and move forward.

His mentor recalls him as a humble yet sharp and hardworking individual with a strong desire to serve. Behind his simple personality was a brilliant mind and unwavering determination, making him a memorable and inspiring student.
