Mumbai traffic police crackdown on fake ‘police’ and ‘press’ tags on vehicles

Mumbai, Apr 3: The Mumbai Traffic Police have launched a city-wide crackdown on private vehicles illegally using beacon lights, sirens, and misleading nameplates, following reports of widespread misuse.

The enforcement drive, carried out on April 1 and 2, targeted vehicles fitted with unauthorised red, blue, and yellow beacon lights—often used to imitate VIP movement and evade traffic restrictions. Officials also removed fake labels such as “Police”, “Press”, and “Advocate” displayed on private vehicles.

Joint Commissioner Anil Kumbhare confirmed that the action is ongoing and will be intensified in the coming days. Authorities warned that use of unauthorised lights or sirens will attract hefty fines, and in serious cases, vehicle registrations may be cancelled along with legal proceedings.

According to officials, around 80 violators were penalised during the operation, with several illegal dome lights and sirens seized. The drive covered key areas including South Central, Marine Drive, and Bandra.

Sources revealed that some of the vehicles belonged to government employees, politicians, and senior officials, none of whom are legally permitted to use such facilities. “All unauthorised lights were removed and seized. Fines were imposed and strict warnings issued,” an official said, adding that repeat offenders will face stricter action.

The traffic police have also urged citizens to report such violations by sharing photographs through official helplines and social media platforms.
