Bengaluru, Apr 20: A committee of Legislative Assembly Speakers from five states, constituted by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to evaluate and strengthen the Anti-Defection Law, will meet in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on April 22 and 23, Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference, Khader said an earlier meeting of the committee had been held in Mumbai, and the upcoming Odisha meeting will be the second such sitting.

He said Speakers from Odisha, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Karnataka will participate in the discussions. The committee is expected to submit its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker within one year.

Khader also clarified that a decision on the Assembly membership of MLA Vinay Kulkarni will be taken once official court orders are received, following his conviction by a court.

Responding to a question regarding the failure of a constitutional amendment bill in the Lok Sabha due to lack of majority support, Khader said that constitutional decisions and discussions must ensure that no region or community feels injustice.

He emphasised the importance of democratic debate and constitutional processes in safeguarding the interests of all sections of society.
