Mangaluru, Apr 29: Deputy director of the Mangaluru port fisheries department, Revathi said the deceased fisherman was a hardworking man and his family has been pushed into hardship due to his sudden demise. She said no amount of help would be enough for the family, and efforts are continuing to secure assistance from the government as well.
She was speaking at a cheque distribution programme held on Wednesday at Bahar E Noor Hall, where financial assistance was handed over to the family of fisherman Murugan P, who died in February after a beacon pole collapsed at the harbour.

On the occasion, a total assistance of Rs 5.40 lac was handed over to his wife Hamsavalli. The amount included Rs 1.50 lac from Mangaluru Coastal Minority Fishermen Primary Cooperative Society, Rs 1.50 lac from the Fresh Fish Traders Association, Rs 1.20 lac collected from fisheries workers, Rs 1 lac contributed by workers Siyab, Babu and Meeran, and Rs 20,000 personally contributed by deputy director Revathi.
During the programme, Haj pilgrims U T Ahmed Shareef, Abdul Azeez Bastipadpu, H R Iqbal, Mohammed Siraj Mastikatte, and Ullal Dargah president B J Hanif were felicitated and given a farewell.
The programme was presided over by association president J Mohammed Ishaq. Fresh Fish Traders Association president K L Ismail, vice-president of Mangaluru Coastal Minority Fishermen Primary Cooperative Society Ahmed Bava Bajal, directors B Ibrahim Khalil, S M Ibrahim, Muhammed Ashraf, T H Hameed, M A Gafoor, A M K Mohammed Ibrahim, U T Ahmed Shareef, B Mohammed Shali, S K Ismail, Anwar A N R, chief executive officer D Abdul Latheef and others were present.
Former Mangaluru taluk panchayat member Mustafa Harekal compered the programme.
