Karnataka govt takes tough stance on illegal migration: 427 foreigners deported this year

Bengaluru, May 1: The state government has intensified its crackdown on illegal migration and drug-related offenses, resulting in the deportation of 427 foreign nationals so far in 2026, said home minister Dr G Parameshwara.

Addressing reporters, the minister stated that the number of deportations is on the rise due to the stringent measures implemented in the state over the last three years. Among those deported this year, 286 are Bangladeshi nationals. Notably, many of them were repatriated via air routes instead of land routes.

The minister provided comparative data, noting that 401 foreign nationals were identified and deported in 2025, while 339 individuals were sent back in 2024. He further revealed that more than 50% of the total cases are related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Earlier, foreign nationals involved in criminal cases were permitted to remain in the country until the completion of legal proceedings. However, the government has now decided to change this approach. In certain instances, rather than pursuing prolonged criminal litigation, the government is coordinating with respective embassies to deport such individuals immediately following their arrest.
