Seoul, May 8: In a striking blend of technology and spirituality, South Korea has introduced its first humanoid robot monk, named “Gabi”, during a Buddhist precept ceremony held at Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple.
The 4.3-foot-tall humanoid robot participated in the ritual ahead of Buddha’s Birthday celebrations at the headquarters of the Jogye Order, the country’s largest Buddhist sect.

Dressed in traditional grey-and-brown monk robes, Gabi bowed before senior monks, joined prayers and formally pledged devotion to Buddhist teachings during the ceremony.
According to reports, the initiative was aimed at exploring how modern technology and spirituality can coexist in an increasingly digital society while also helping religious institutions connect with younger generations.
The ceremony reportedly included modified rituals designed specifically for the robot. Traditional practices involving incense burns were replaced with symbolic stickers to avoid damaging the robot’s hardware.
Gabi was also given an adapted set of Buddhist precepts suitable for the AI era. Alongside traditional teachings about respecting life and avoiding harmful behaviour, the robot was programmed with guidelines such as respecting humans, not damaging objects or other robots, conserving energy and avoiding deceptive communication.
Temple authorities clarified that the robot is not intended to replace human monks or spiritual leaders, but rather serve as a symbol of dialogue between ancient traditions and emerging technologies.
The unusual event has attracted widespread attention online, with many social media users reacting with curiosity and humour over the idea of a robot taking Buddhist vows.
However, religious scholars and observers say the move reflects how centuries-old institutions are increasingly experimenting with artificial intelligence and digital tools to remain relevant in the modern era.
The debut of Gabi has now sparked broader discussions on the future relationship between faith, ethics and artificial intelligence in society.
