Panaji, May 19: In a move aimed at strengthening inland water transport and reducing road congestion, the Goa government has introduced two modern ferry vessels on the busy Panaji–Betim route across the Mandovi river, officials said on Tuesday.
The Panaji–Betim ferry crossing is one of the most heavily used river transport routes in the state, and the new initiative is expected to improve connectivity while encouraging sustainable travel options.

The newly inducted ferries, named Kushavati and Salaulim, are larger and more advanced than conventional vessels and come equipped with cruise-like features.
Powered by twin 480-horsepower engines, the ferries also feature a hydraulic navigation and ramp system, replacing the earlier manual mechanism used for loading vehicles and passengers.
Each ferry can accommodate nearly 150 passengers and up to eight cars, significantly enhancing commuter capacity and reducing waiting time.
According to officials from the river navigation department, the vessels were introduced at the upgraded Betim ferry ramp under the leadership of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to make water transport faster, more efficient and cost-effective while easing traffic pressure on roads between Panaji and Betim.
Regular commuters have welcomed the upgrade, saying it has improved both travel time and comfort.
“Absolutely the best. Earlier, the journey used to take around six minutes; now it takes about three minutes,” said Betim-based commuter Chetan Bhosle, adding that onboard facilities were also cleaner and improved.
Another commuter, Sandeep Dongrekar, said the upgraded service would greatly benefit daily travellers, highlighting smoother operations and better amenities.
