Panaji, May 24: Kerala governor Rajendra Arlekar has said it is “unfortunate” that India does not require any minimum educational qualification to enter politics, unlike several other professions that follow strict eligibility criteria.
Speaking at a National Youth Parliament programme in Panaji, Arlekar observed that most professional fields, including civil services, law and medicine, require structured education and training before individuals can take up responsibilities. However, he noted that no such formal requirement exists for those entering public life.

He pointed out that while careers in government and specialised sectors demand academic preparation and qualification-based selection, politics lacks a comparable framework to ensure systematic training of leaders.
The Governor emphasised that modern governance and policymaking require informed, responsible and well-prepared leadership. He suggested that the issue deserves serious national discussion and reflection.
Urging young people to consider public service, Rajendra Arlekar said those entering politics should do so with adequate education, awareness and a strong sense of responsibility towards the nation.
