Mumbai, May 29: In a significant step towards modernising urban water transport, Maharashtra has launched the country’s first electric hydrofoil “flying boat”, the Candela P12, introducing a high-speed and eco-friendly commuting option in Mumbai’s coastal waters.
The hi-tech vessel, developed by Swedish manufacturer Candela, has been introduced as part of the state government’s push to strengthen water-based transportation infrastructure, following a model similar to Kerala’s growing focus on waterways.

The new flying boat service will initially operate on two major routes — Gateway of India to Alibaug and Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves — offering commuters and tourists a faster and more convenient travel alternative.
What makes the Candela P12 unique is its advanced hydrofoil technology. Once the vessel reaches a certain speed, underwater wings lift the boat’s hull above the water surface, allowing it to glide smoothly through the air-like motion. This significantly reduces water resistance, resulting in higher speed, improved energy efficiency and a more stable journey.
Passengers are also expected to experience a more comfortable ride compared to conventional ferries, as the hydrofoil system minimises the impact of waves and rough sea conditions.
The initiative is being viewed as a major boost to sustainable transportation. The Candela P12 operates entirely on electric power, producing zero emissions and eliminating smoke and fuel pollution, thereby supporting cleaner and greener urban mobility.
With the launch of the flying boat service, Mumbai has taken a major step towards building an environmentally friendly and technologically advanced water transport network.
