Mangaluru, May 29: World Paediatric Surgery Week is celebrated globally to raise awareness about surgical conditions affecting children and to highlight the importance of timely paediatric surgical care. The Department of Paediatric Surgery at Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, is celebrating World Paediatric Surgery Week from the June 4 to 10. A series of events will take place during the week to commemorate this important occasion and emphasize the need for accessible, affordable, and high-quality surgical care for every child.

The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Safe Surgery for Every Child’, and the department faculty aim to spread awareness about paediatric surgery. The department consists of three super specialists, namely Dr Sandeep B Rai (Professor and Dean, KSHEMA), Dr Aureen D’Cunha (Associate Professor and In-charge Head of Department) and Dr Keshava Pavan (Assistant Professor). Paediatric Surgery is a specialized branch that deals with the diagnosis, surgical treatment and post-operative care of children ranging from newborns to adolescents. Children are not small adults. Any surgery on a child is best performed by a doctor who understands both their physiology and surgical needs. Hence, surgeries on children performed by Paediatric Surgeons provide the best outcomes.
To highlight this, various competitions are being held, including a quiz for undergraduate and postgraduate students and a poster competition open to all Nitte University staff and students. On the final day, an entertainment and cultural programme is being organized for current and former patients with their families, followed by a formal function to mark the occasion.
The hospital management is offering a 50% concession on surgeries performed by the department for children who attend the Outpatient Department during the week. This initiative will greatly benefit financially disadvantaged patients requiring surgical treatment.
The celebration of this week encourages collaboration among healthcare institutions, government and non-government agencies to improve paediatric surgical facilities, especially in rural and underserved areas. By creating awareness and encouraging timely medical attention, this celebration aims to ensure healthier futures for children worldwide.
