Mangaluru teen helps Karnataka clinch Junior National Basketball title after 45 years

Media Release

Mangaluru, June 1: Divith Vivek Shenava has emerged as one of Karnataka's most promising young basketball players, bringing pride to his family, educational institutions and the state through his dedication, discipline and outstanding performances on the basketball court.

At just 17 years of age, Divith has achieved the rare distinction of representing Karnataka in the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) Junior National Championships on three occasions—once in the Under-16 category and twice in the Under-18 category.

At the 76th Junior National Basketball Championship held in Puducherry in May 2026, Divith served as vice-captain of the Karnataka Under-18 team and played a key role in guiding the side to a historic championship victory. Karnataka emerged champions after defeating Haryana in a thrilling final, adding another glorious chapter to the state's basketball history.

The victory holds special significance, as Karnataka had previously won the Junior National Championship only twice before — at Jamshedpur in 1980 and Goa in 1981. Prior to the formation of Karnataka, the then Mysore state had won the Junior National Championship at Coimbatore in 1966. The 2026 triumph therefore stands as a landmark achievement, ending a 45-year wait and placing this team among the finest in the state's basketball history.

Divith's talent has also earned him selection to the Indian National Basketball camp on two occasions — once in the under-16 category and once in the under-18 category. Although he narrowly missed making the final 12-member Indian squad on both occasions, his selection to the national camps is itself a testament to his exceptional potential and standing among the country's top young basketball players.

Over the years, he has represented Karnataka in numerous prestigious tournaments, consistently displaying commitment, sportsmanship and a strong competitive spirit. His achievements have brought immense recognition to Lourdes Central School, Mangaluru, where he completed his schooling, and St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, where he is currently pursuing his II PUC.

Behind every successful athlete is a strong support system, and Divith is the proud son of Vivek Shenava and Suman Shenava, whose encouragement and unwavering support have played an important role in his sporting journey.

He has been trained under Adithya Mahale, head coach of Mangalore Basketball Club (MBC), and Navin Shetty, chief patron and president of MBC and the DK Basketball Association.
