Annamalai resigns from BJP, signals new political journey amid Tamil Nadu power shift

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 2: In a significant political development, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has reportedly tendered his resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a meeting with BJP national president Nitin Nabin in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Annamalai, who is also expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah later in the day, is said to have informed the party leadership of his decision to part ways and pursue an independent political path. The meeting was also attended by BJP national organisation secretary B L Santhosh.

According to sources, Annamalai conveyed his desire to leave the party on cordial terms, stating that he now wished to "chart his own course". However, senior BJP leaders are reportedly making efforts to persuade the former IPS officer to remain within the party fold, with discussions underway regarding a possible national-level role for him.

Speculation over Annamalai’s future has been growing ever since he was replaced by Nainar Nagendran as the Tamil Nadu BJP chief in 2025. His reduced public appearances and silence on key political developments had fuelled rumours of dissatisfaction within the party.

Sources close to Annamalai indicate that he believes Tamil Nadu politics has entered a new phase following the emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay as a major political force. According to those familiar with the discussions, Annamalai feels that traditional political narratives centred on language and Dravidian identity are losing relevance, and that the state's political landscape is undergoing a significant transformation.

The possibility of Annamalai's exit has generated considerable interest among his supporters. In Madurai, posters have appeared urging him to take on a "new avatar" and lead Tamil Nadu towards political change.

Political observers note that Annamalai’s departure could have major implications for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, particularly ahead of future electoral battles. His aggressive political style and outspoken remarks on AIADMK icons M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa had reportedly strained relations between the BJP and AIADMK, contributing to challenges in maintaining the alliance.

Annamalai, who joined politics in 2020 and quickly rose to become one of the BJP’s youngest state presidents, is now believed to be exploring the possibility of launching a people-centric movement. Whether such an initiative would eventually evolve into a political party remains unclear.

The former BJP leader has neither confirmed nor denied reports of his resignation and future plans, stating that he will make his position clear within the next two days. The speculation has intensified further with supporters putting up large banners across Coimbatore ahead of his birthday celebrations.

Questions regarding Annamalai’s political future gained momentum after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, particularly when he was not fielded from Coimbatore, a constituency he was reportedly keen to contest.
