Sophie Turner reflects on identity struggles, parenthood and life beyond her 20s

Los Angeles, Jun 8: Actress Sophie Turner has opened up about the personal challenges she faced during her twenties, revealing that she experienced a “mini breakdown” and struggled with questions of identity after the end of her breakthrough role in Game of Thrones.

The actress, who recently turned 30, reflected on the emotional highs and lows of the past decade, describing it as a period marked by personal growth, uncertainty and self-discovery.

Speaking in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Turner said she and her longtime friends—many of whom she has known since her school days—have spent the past year celebrating their 30th birthdays and embracing a new phase of life with renewed optimism.

According to Turner, each member of her close-knit circle faced their own struggles during their twenties, but they now feel more confident and positive about the future. She admitted that she was ready to leave that chapter behind and welcomed the transition into her thirties.

Turner rose to global fame at the age of 13 when she was cast as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. After portraying the character for nearly a decade, she said stepping away from the role left her grappling with a significant identity crisis.

The actress explained that she had spent much of her formative years growing alongside the character and eventually found it difficult to separate her own identity from that of Sansa. When the series concluded in 2019 after eight seasons, she experienced a period of uncertainty about who she was and what direction her life would take next.

Turner acknowledged that letting go of such a defining role was emotionally challenging and described the transition as both strange and difficult.

The actress is now preparing for a new chapter in her career through a television adaptation of the popular Tomb Raider franchise, in which she plays the iconic adventurer Lara Croft.

Discussing the role, Turner noted that Lara Croft's personality differs greatly from her own. While she admires the character's determination and focus, she joked that her own tendency to become distracted makes her very different from the fearless explorer she portrays on screen.

She also spoke candidly about living with ADHD, describing herself as someone who often moves from one task to another and worries more than her fictional counterpart. Despite these differences, Turner said she and Lara share a fascination with history.

The actress also dismissed the idea of fully immersing herself in a character through method acting, suggesting that parenthood makes it difficult to completely separate professional and personal life.

Turner, who shares daughters Willa and Delphine with former husband Joe Jonas, said being a mother keeps her grounded and prevents her from becoming entirely absorbed in a role.

As she enters a new decade both personally and professionally, Turner appears focused on embracing change, balancing motherhood with her acting career and continuing to evolve beyond the role that first made her a household name.
