New Delhi, Jun 9: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled a series of technology-driven initiatives aimed at transforming the maintenance of National Highways and Expressways across the country, with a strong emphasis on road safety, operational efficiency and enhanced commuter experience.
As part of the new framework, NHAI has issued detailed guidelines mandating the use of mechanised systems for maintaining drainage networks in urban and built-up areas. The authority has also directed the deployment of advanced road maintenance equipment, including automatic pothole repair machines, compacting and patching units, and mechanised road-sweeping vehicles.

The move is intended to strengthen preventive maintenance practices, improve infrastructure quality and ensure stricter adherence to maintenance standards under existing contracts. Officials believe the measures will help extend the lifespan of highway assets while minimising inconvenience for road users.
With the monsoon season approaching, NHAI has made mechanised cleaning of lined drainage channels compulsory on urban stretches of National Highways and Expressways. The initiative is aimed at improving stormwater management and reducing the risk of waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
The cleaning framework will utilise specialised equipment such as high-capacity suction and jetting machines, hydraulic grab systems and dewatering pumps. These technologies will be used to remove silt deposits, clear blockages, extract slurry and dispose of accumulated debris from drainage channels, ensuring smoother water flow.
The authority has also instructed contractors and concessionaires to follow strict maintenance schedules and conduct regular inspections of drainage infrastructure. Compliance with timelines for addressing deficiencies will be closely monitored to prevent deterioration of road conditions.
In another significant development, NHAI has formally included automated pothole-filling, compacting and patching machines, along with mechanised road sweepers, within the approved equipment list under Performance-Based Maintenance Contracts (PBMC).
The revised framework establishes a mechanism for evaluating and approving expenditure related to the deployment of these technologies in ongoing maintenance projects.
According to NHAI, the adoption of automated pothole repair systems will enable faster maintenance response, improve road surface quality and reduce disruptions to traffic. Quick and efficient repairs are expected to enhance driving comfort while preserving the structural integrity of highway pavements.
The latest initiatives form part of NHAI’s broader strategy to modernise highway management through technology, improve infrastructure resilience and deliver safer, smoother and more reliable travel experiences for millions of road users across India.
