Mangaluru: Aloysius PU College launches Centre for Social Concern

Mangaluru, Jun 18: St Aloysius Pre-University College, formally inaugurated the Centre for Social Concern (CSC). The centre has been established as a platform dedicated to nurturing social responsibility, compassion, leadership, and community engagement among students. Through service-oriented initiatives, outreach programmes, and meaningful societal engagement, the centre seeks to inspire young people to become agents of positive social change.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Padma Shri and Karnataka Rajyotsava awardee Harekala Hajabba, whose remarkable contributions to the field of education lent special significance to the occasion.

The programme commenced with a soulful invocation by the college choir, creating an atmosphere of reverence and purpose as students, faculty, and dignitaries gathered to witness the launch of this meaningful initiative.

A significant highlight of the event was the pledge-taking ceremony, during which the dignitaries, CSC staff members, and student representatives collectively reaffirmed their commitment to service, social responsibility, and community welfare. This was followed by the unveiling of the CSC logo and the launch of the symbolic initiative, “Walking an Extra Mile,” embodying the Jesuit value of Magis-the spirit of striving beyond personal interests in the service of others.

In his inaugural address, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, principal, emphasized the importance of collective growth and shared success. He noted that true achievement lies not merely in individual accomplishments but in contributing to the well-being and progress of the community. Encouraging students to embrace the values of unity, cooperation, and empathy, he urged them to actively participate in building a compassionate, inclusive, and socially responsible society.

Addressing the gathering, Harekala Hajabba shared his inspiring life journey, reflecting on the hardships, challenges, and setbacks he encountered while pursuing his dream of establishing a school in his native village. He highlighted how perseverance, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his vision enabled him to transform that dream into reality. Emphasizing the transformative power of education, he encouraged students to value the opportunities available to them and to pursue their goals with resilience and dedication. His humility, simplicity, and steadfast commitment to the cause of education deeply inspired the audience and left a lasting impression on all present.

The chief guest was felicitated in the traditional manner, and the citation was read by Snehal Peris, CSC staff in-charge. A video presentation showcasing the vision, objectives, and proposed initiatives of the centre was also screened, offering participants an insightful overview of its mission and future activities.

The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of nearly 150 students, including members of the student council and student representatives of the Centre for Social Concern. The vote of thanks was delivered by Thanmay Gatti, CSC secretary, who was also recognised for contributing the highest number of books during the book donation drive organised by the centre.

Among the dignitaries present were Fr Anthony Derrick SJ, campus minister; Kiran Shetty and Inas Dias, deans; Snehal Peris, CSC staff in-charge; and Reeva Pinto, CSC president, along with faculty members, staff, and students. The programme was compered by Janet Pinto, head of the department of Kannada.
