Private ferry drifts during tanker loading at Adpai, mishap averted

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Oct 2: A privately owned ferry drifted from its position while a diesel tanker was being driven onto it at the Adpai ferry point, but a mishap was averted as the vessel remained in shallow water.

The River Navigation Department (RND) said the ferry was not part of its ferry service and that its owner had not obtained permission to use the Adpai ferry ramp.

RND director Vikram Rajebhosale said the ferry slipped backwards during manoeuvring as it had not been properly secured to the mooring pile. The ferry was subsequently brought back into position and the tanker was removed without major damage, he said.

Rajebhosale said regulatory oversight of such matters is expected to shift to the Goa Maritime Board under the new maritime legislation, including licensing and certification. He said the RND is therefore not authorised to take action against the private ferry owner.
