Bantwal, Oct 22: An auto-rickshaw is generally a vehicle that takes passengers from one place to another. But Sushan’s auto-rickshaw in Bantwal is quite different. Along with travelling, passengers can read books, charge their mobile phones and drink water. A first-aid box is also available for emergencies.
Sushan, a resident of Ajjibetti in BC Road, Bantwal, Dakshina Kannada district, has transformed his auto-rickshaw into a mini library. His intention is to encourage passengers to read books instead of looking at their mobile phones while waiting at traffic signals or in traffic.

A wooden rack has been installed behind the driver’s seat, containing storybooks, novels, newspapers and inspirational books. Passengers can read books of their choice during their journey.
Small plants have also been placed on both sides of the auto-rickshaw, conveying a message of environmental awareness. In addition, the auto has facilities for mobile charging and drinking water, a first-aid box, and emergency helpline numbers for the police, fire service and hospitals.
There is also a jar of chocolates and toffees for children. Sushan, who has been interested in reading books since childhood, has also worked in the Kannada film industry. He has experience working as an assistant art director in a few films.
At a time when the reading habit is declining in the mobile-phone era, Sushan’s unique initiative to encourage people to use their travel time to read books is now attracting attention.
