Beltangady, Oct 26: A herd of wild elephants has caused extensive damage to agricultural plantations in Kelagina Makki and Melina Makki areas of Malavantige village, leaving farmers worried about heavy financial losses.
The elephants reportedly entered the plantations of several farmers, including Sheenappa Gowda, Ananda Gowda, Purandara and Jayarama, and destroyed more than 150 arecanut trees. Five coconut trees were also damaged, while several banana plants were trampled and broken.

According to local residents, the herd is suspected to comprise more than seven elephants. The animals have reportedly been entering plantations at night and damaging crops, creating anxiety among farmers in the area.
Arecanut, coconut and banana cultivation are major sources of income for families in these villages. The destruction of mature arecanut trees has caused particular concern, as the trees provide produce for several years and take time to replace.
Farmers fear that the damage to the arecanut trees could affect their income for years, adding to the financial burden on affected families. Residents are concerned about further incursions by the elephants and the possibility of additional crop losses.
