Neil Armstrong, the 'giant leap' Man, Dies at 82

Washington, Aug 26 (PTI): Neil Armstrong, the US astronaut who in 1969 took a 'giant leap' for mankind by becoming the first man to set foot on the moon, died today at the age of 82.

Armstrong died just weeks after he underwent a heart surgery, and his family said in a statement that he passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, according to US media reports.

July 20, 1969 became a watershed date in the history of mankind after Armstrong, commanding the Apollo 11 spacecraft landed on the moon, and accompanied by fellow astronaut Edwin Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon.

"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," is how Armstrong had broken the historic news from the Earth's satellite when he radioed back.
It had taken Apollo 11 craft, carrying Armstrong and fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, four days to complete the nearly 250,000-mile (400,000 kms) journey, as the world waited with bated breath.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves," his family said in a statement.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honour Neil, we have a simple request. Honour his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," they said.

Armstrong was 38 years old when he became the first man to set foot on the moon.
The development that came at a time of intense space rivalry between the reigning superpowers -- the US and the USSR -- gave America a major leap over its Cold War foe.
As soon as the news spread, tributes started pouring in for the legendary former astronaut.

"Neil Armstrong was a true American hero, both because of his extraordinary service to his country and the honorable life he led. He was a groundbreaking Naval aviator and the world's most famous astronaut, but it was his humble and gracious response to the torrent of attention that followed his accomplishments that may have set him apart most," said Ohio Senator Rob Portman.

It was in Ohio town of Wapakoneta that Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930.

Later on, Armstrong chose to avoid the public limelight and lead an intensely private life. He resigned from NASA in 1971 to take up teaching engineering at the University of Cincinnati for several years.

In fact, his family in the statement desribed him as "a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job."

In one of his rare public appearances at a gathering with Aldrin and other Apollo astronauts to mark the 30th anniversary of their moon landing, he recognised the importance of his achievement.

"In my own view, the important achievement of Apollo was a demonstration that humanity is not forever chained to this planet, and our visions go rather further than that, and our opportunities are unlimited," Armstrong said.

Neil Armstrong would be laughing in his grave if he were to read these comments. I would only hope not that someone among us would now say there is only GOD ELEMENT and no God exists and that religion was a figment of imagination of Moses and all his descendants have blindly followed him over 5000 years of human history. “ Happy are those who do not see and yet believe…..”

I am of firm opinion that man has landed on the moon and he is none other than Astronaut respectable beloved Neil Armstrong no doubt whatsoever. There are ample evidences of his landing on the moon. After return from mission on moon he has toured most of the countries.

Dr. Anil Shetty has correctly prescribed anti-biotic. But the patients were not cured, reason, patients didn’t take full dosage/prescribed full dosage is not taken thinking that the anti-biotic may be from bogus similar to the false name of R. Fernandes Dubai.

@Dr Anil shetty , with all the respect to N . Armstrong , just wanted to make some points. Hubble telescope has to b several hundreds km in dia and 5 km away from moon , so that it can't pic images from moon , ie out of focal length. It just sounds weird , Hubble mirror is 94.5 inch in dia and 376 miles above earth , so moon is well within reach . If u compare with dawes equation , may be resolution is very less , so that flag of just 5 feet may b visisble as a dot , agree , but what about the other telescope closer and hovering arround moon , is there any strong credible evidence supported by china or russia . Biggest sceptic of mission was YUri GAgarin himself ( controversy about stars background , it alleged that NASA hIDE it becoz , russians may be interpolate stars to know the exact location ) , and majority americans it self ...... Last GOOGLE iS not gospel either its not cannonized , but it gives liberty of free speech and skeptics . peaple will not just believe becoz MR XYZ has said , they vl questions it , so as moon misiion , in years to come.... Scientists walways want us to believe , becoz its their ROZI ROTI....

    R. Fernandes, I already proved that your comment about the number of missions is wrong, Now about Scholars on Google, Google is not a text book, it's an archive of what people all over the world post, so if something is mentioned on Google it doesnt become the gospel truth, I hope you understand that, there are hundreds of articles on fake treatments for cancers and new age remedies for every ailment under the sun, just because it is somewhere on the internet, doesnt make it true, You talk about scholars, please name one who supports your view, Please quote even one scientific article from any astronomy publication or scientific journal, and not some mumbo jumbo you read on the net posted by some deluded clown ( which you obviously believe) If you have any reasons to believe that the moon mission was a hoax, then state those reasons, and I will rebut them one by one. The Moon mission involved 400,000 people, are you telling me that 400.000 people are involved in a conspiracy?, Last week N.A.S.A sent Curiosity a car sized lander to Mars, they slowed it step by step, and safely landed it on the Martian surface and then they remote cotrolled it from 100 million miles away and made it drive on the surface, compared to that a Moon Landing was a picnic, its technologically and scientifically possible and feasible, and no scientific authority anywhere on the world disputes it (Except for some misinformed people on the net), oh wait, maybe now you think Curiosity never landed on Mars?

I would like to correct the misinformed Rohan Braganza about his misconceptions, one- There is thousands of hours of both Video and audio footage about the moon missions and the landings, they are archived all over the world and are freely accessible, two-The Hubble is the worlds most powerful telescope, but it is not like other ordinary telescopes. The images it takes are mainly in the near ultravoilet and near infrared wavelengths and are very useful to see distant galaxies and is not designed to view near objects like the moon.

If the so called 'moon mission - man landing' is true , then its huge loss for world on the legends demise. . Everything is not clear and lot of confusions apart from three astronomers . NASA says almost 12 moon missions but fails to provide audio or video evidence . On the other hand even scpetics are also not that strong , as LMR telescope in 2000 shown traces of modules remains on the moon , or is it morphed ....possible . It vl remain a secret for common man like us , until may be china embark on journey ...... But big question ,, which all the sceptic ask ...... Why biggest telescope in world HUBBLE can't detect visible remains of first moon mission ..... well it can trace galaxys far away , why not moon....something fishy??

It is obvious R. Fernandes has absolutely no idea about whatever he is commenting on, He says that if the moon landing was true, then there would have been 10 more such missions, In fact there were actually 10 more such missions with manned moon landings, from Apollo-7 to Apollo-17, only one of them (Apollo-13) was a failure, as for his suggestion that we should google, to prove his claims, it is laughable because everyone knows that certain subjects on google are filled with conspiracy theories without any basis or credibility, and are comments not by experts but skeptics without any scientific knowledge. High definition photos taken by sattellites orbiting the moon have clearly shown evidence of lunar evidence, next R. Fernandes will claim that the Earth is Flat and that the Earth is the centre of the Galaxy, Google it R. Fernandes.

In total, twenty-four astronauts have traveled to the Moon. Three have made the trip twice, and twelve have walked on its surface from July 1969 to December 1972. Would it still be possible that all the manned missions to the Moon were stage set and bogus ? If so, it would be the most closely guarded secret the earth has ever known!
True or not, I vividly remember as a little child, standing in front of the huge Murphy radio along with my father and other siblings and listening to the live commentary of man landing on the moon. I was big enough then to understand what was a rocket and a moon. It was a fascinating childhood experience indeed !

Americans are lying,no one landed on moon. Here's few things that still to be answered by NASA.

    1) Sceptics argue that the lack of stars on Moon photographs is acceptable, despite zero atmosphere to obscure the view. Yuri Gagarin, pronounced the stars to be "astonishingly brilliant". See the official NASA pictures above that I have reproduced that show 'stars' in the sky, as viewed from the lunar surface. And why exactly do you think there are hardly any stars visible on Apollo films taken from the Moon? The answers simple - Professional astronomers would quickly calculate that the configuration and distances of star formations were incorrect and so NASA had to remove them to make sure they could keep up the scam.

    2) The pure oxygen atmosphere in the module would have melted the Hasselblad's camera covering and produced poisonous gases. Why weren't the astronauts affected?

    3) There should have been a substantial crater blasted out under the LM's 10,000 pound thrust rocket. Sceptics would have you believe that the engines only had the power to blow the dust from underneath the LM as it landed. If this is true, how did Armstrong create that famous boot print if all the dust had been blown away?

    4) Why did so many NASA Moonscape photos have non parallel shadows? sceptics will tell you because there is two sources of light on the Moon - the Sun and the Earth... That maybe the case, but the shadows would still fall in the same direction, not two or three different angles and Earth shine would have no effect during the bright lunar day (the time at which the Apollo was on the Moon).

5)The relentless bombardment of the Sun's rays would rapidly have overheated the vehicle to lethal temperatures with no atmosphere into which to dump the heat build up.

    6) Who would dare risk using the LM on the Moon when a simulated Moon landing was never tested?

    7) Why did NASA's administrator resign just days before the first Apollo mission?

    and many more....
