Air Kerala to Take off in Mid 2013 ?

Thiruvanthapuram, Oct 9 (Agencies) : Air Kerala, the state government's airline, would be launched April 14, 2013, to coincide with Vishu, new year's day in the Malayalam calendar, says Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

"It (Air Kerala) will be airborne April 14. The only question is whether the first flight will be an international or domestic one. Next month, we will be applying to the director general of civil aviation with the preliminary capital of Rs100 crore, which we will raise by then," Chandy, who is convalescing after a leg injury, told IANS during an exclusive chat.

The chief minister explained that under the rules, an airline can only fly international routes after completing five years of domestic service; there is also a stipulation about the number of aircraft that an airline operating internationally should have.

"But Air India Express was given a relaxation in rules when it started international operations. They said it was because it was a subsidiary of Air India. So, when the state government put up the application, we also sought similar exemption. Moreover, at the moment, we are given to understand that one foreign airline is allowed to fly in here, without observing these stipulations," Chandy said.

Chandy first took up the project in 2004. After he stepped down in 2006, the project lay in cold storage, during the tenure of the Left government. On returning as chief minister last May, one of the first decisions Chandy took was to revive this project. He has received support from Malayalee businessmen in the Middle East.

"We have, in principle, decided to float shares of Rs.10,000 each and we were surprised when our own Malayalee businessmen there (in the Middle East) who employ thousands of employees agreed to take shares in their employees' names. Each of them employ more than 20,000 employees, so the issue of raising money of Rs.500 crore is not at all a problem. We are confident our dream will soon take flight," Chandy said.

Chandy has drawn out a schedule, and fixed April 14 as the target date for launch of the new airline. And if Air Kerala is unable to fly international, it will at least take to domestic skies.

With Air India having opened a brand new hangar facility in the Thiruvananthapuram airport, Air Kerala, on entering into a contract with Air India and paying the maintenance charges, can use the hangar here, said the chief minister, adding that Air Kerala will also have access to the engineering department of Air India, so it will not need to recruit engineers.

Air India was given the land for setting up the hangar free of cost by the Kerala government. What this means, though, is that Air Kerala can only lease B-737-800 aircraft; these are what the hangar here is equipped to service.

Good work by kerala govt. Atleat whether airkerala will succssed or not but they thought about their people. dear.

Kerala Gov. should concentrate on their state owned transport buses. Not a single volvo bus is going from Trivandrum to Bangalore or any cities .everybody is depending on KSRTC or private buses.so it is better to improve their state owned transport system first. if kerala gov.can start Airline means each state in south will start their own airlines because These states are financially strong compare to kerala state and also in administration

Now there is Congress government, in the year 2016 Communist government will come to power, they will change the Rules & Regulations according to their requirement. Then again in the year 2021 Congress government will come to the power!!!. Finally Airlines will suffer by this & Tax Payer of Keralites should bear the Loss!!!!

    vikram,
Tradition means someone created previously. Why you can not create new tradition instead of following old tradition. You have capacity to do whatever you want. You can create new tradition which is good for you and next generation will follow up if they like. But for the name of tradition, do not fight for that. It is created by human only. Those days there was no education. They developed least way of life. Wearing lungi, covering whole body which you really do not like, but sake of tradition you are doing. This wrong. Wake up do something for the society under your period by using your best knowledge instead of following tradition. You can not dectate others. They know what they have to do.

As far as Karnataka concerned, they do not need an airline, meanwhile for people of Kerala, its an an essential one since millions of keralites are working abroad. Roads in kerala are far better than mangalore but karnataka is best in bus transportation. Karnataka people have to learn alot from keralites about unity, peace and harmony irrespective of caste and religion. Best wishes for air Kerala :) Hope it will start from Mangalore also.

It means aviation industry is not making loss. If you have better management, any business in Consumer Market like India will run in profit for ever. If this is the case, then Aviation Ministry should make serious note of KF Air Lines Lose. Since AK will be state Owned Air Lines, this will lead to more infighting between Political Parties and subsequently lead to more corruption too. Anyhow even if it is for short period of smooth running, at least one such State People can enjoy their life. But worrying part is AIE and AK will start fighting for landing first right in all Kerala Airports. Even Pilot will pronounce when landing like this “Sirre, Aiyoo Laanding Alle”

Ruchi I fully agree with your comment. What keeps malayalis and tamils united is their language and nothing else. Every religion people there speak one language. We in Mangalore/Karnataka have many languages eg. tulu, kannada, konkani, beary, urdu etc. etc. based on religion, caste, groups etc. Hence it is very difficult to unite people here for common cause. The Mangalore-Bangalore BG railway line which was completed after a long time and the only M'lore-B'lore train which was running was diverted to kerala by an unelected Kerala MP. Our nerve-dead elected MPs or MLAs did nothing. Only one common language in the state is really gods gift.

we indians do not need new airlines such as AIR KERALA or AIR MANGALORE... this will not be of much help.... its easy to start an airline...... difficult to keep the business running..
rather than thinking state wise.... we should think for the betterment of our country...
so rather than starting off STATE airlines.. government should concentrate on improving national airline.... which is AIR INDIA.. if AIR INDIA improves to a level where majority of the flyer's dont have complaints then there is no need for STATE airlines.

secondly private airlines which are doing good business such as INDIGO & SPICEJET should be allowed to fly international from airports like MANGALORE(which will stop monopoly of A.I. EXPRESS)

althought we stay in different states... dont forget we are indians and should always think for the betterment of INDIA as a whole...

We Mangaloreans have to satisfy only with Air India Express with seats like rocks, and left over dhal, piece of dry cake and pack of ceap quality juice on board.

Reading comments from people of our undivided districts I keep wondering how come we are not have a think called to appricate, we only criticize that is why our districts are famous for wrong reasons inspite of excellent manpower and excellent educational set up, we should learn from Keralities, their unity is outstanding they dont care about which religion u belong, the blood is the same colour, so they go by the word are u a Malyali, that's great, 90 % of U.A.E. base lulu group has staff from kerala, its right the owner is from that part that is called unity, 90 % of New Medical group staff are also from kerala, that is for us to judge, we have many sucessfull business groups abroad, but they dont think of bringing their people forward, so why are we jealous of others when we can't move on , on our own, if they give puttu or payasam so be it, why give hamburger/or pancakes, when its a kerala based airline they are proud of their tradition, so be it, why should they follow us, when we speak english we neither speak it in full, with little bit of konkani/tulu mix, that is fine, but we can't call ourselves great, I wont be suprized if this Airline be the best, if not someone from the gulf like the lulu group will take it over and make it work and will see it Via Mangalore and many of us who criticise it today, might be running here and there for the ticket and its cheaper yaar, nothing offensive, but see the way Air India express and its staff treat us today, we welcome another airline on board and being a South based one, it will for sure atleast for some from our undivided districts will be a gain not a loss, Mangalore airport might lose some revenue someday that is expected as our politicians are only fighting among themselves or busy in filling their pockets where as Kerala based politicians though not genieous will try to see they back something to the state, lets try to improve our system rather pin point others set up

Good plan by Kerala govt. This Airline will be a big success.
GZ Tumkunte - pl note that Mumbai & Gujarat people who have visited entire South India & Goa have always told that Karnataka is TEN times more Beautiful than Kerala or Goa. But due to its apathy it has failed in developing its Tourism. As usual lack of proper PRO exercise in the Media and lack of interest in providing infrastructure. Except Bangalore, Mysore & Hampi, nothing beyond is publicized by Karnataka govt. Coorg is called as KASHMIR OF SOUTH INDIA, but there is no much publicity outside the State.

Rakesh shetty, operating an airline is not simple as operating bakery and delivery vehicles. With the state BJP attitude and corrupt mentality, BJP flight with fake parts will not make one successful take off and landing!! Write something practical!!

The Tourism Minister of Kerala who had visited Karnataka 15 years ago and Toured this state extensively in one go, at the end told that, " If Kerala had the same scenic beauty and Historical places like Karnataka, then I would have made Kerala the Number One Tourism destination, not only in India but in the entire world" !.
This was not any appreciation, but it was a slap on Karnataka's face, because it indirectly meant that "you Karnataka people do not know how the make use of your own strong points which was gifted to you by the nature and your forefathers".
Kerala has done good job by Starting its own Air Lines. Surely it will first connect all the tourist destinations of India to attract more tourists to its State. If they start international flight then there will not be any dearth of Passengers for its flights especially from Gulf to Kerala & Mangalore.

Kerala will receive further boost for its Tourism, which is already doing extremely well.
The Karnataka which calls itself as 'God's own Garden' can take some lessons from 'God's own Country'.
Capt. Gopinath of Deccan Airways, can ably guide Karnataka govt for setting up 'KARNATAKA AIRWAYS' or 'Gomatha Pushpaka Vimana Samsthe'. Pl do not take guidance of Vijay Mallya or else it will be like King Fisher Airlines - eating more than you can chew, giving more importance to Air-hostesses than Pilots .

Appreciate Kerala Govt. pro-people policies, will benefit as so many of them are NRI's.
Keralites are known for strong regionalism but a exemplary state of UNITY in diversity for that it can be called as God's own Country.
Karnataka also would have been like them in UNITY, but SADLY communal forces brought in deep divisions from else where, may be enemy Countries would be very happy for it.

Good News. We look forward flying AK initially in domestic routes and eventually to at least Gulf countries. Our Congress chief minister is doing the best within his capacity. As far as mobilizing funds, Keralites are capable to fund for even a dozen air crafts, if needed. Our unity is strong and vision is one at the end of the day.

Good Luck to Air Kerala and wish honorable chief minister a speedy recovery from his mild illness.
