Six Die in Shooting at Mexico Wedding

Mexico City, Nov 15 (IANS/EFE): At least six people were killed and two were wounded by gunfire during and after a wedding party in the western Mexican town of Salvador Escalante, officials said.

The sons of the town's police chief have been detained in the killings, according to local media, while officials said three people wounded at the scene were killed while being taken to a hospital.

The government secretary of Michoacan state, Jesus Reyna, told reporters there is no sign the killings were the work of organized crime.

According to local media, two armed men burst into the wedding party in the early hours of Tuesday, fired at one individual and then began shooting at other guests.

Two people who had been shot at the scene were finished off while being transported in an ambulance, while another wounded individual suffered the same fate while taken to a hospital in a car.

On Tuesday morning, police officers arrested the sons of Salvador Escalante's police chief - whose name was withheld - for their alleged role in the killings, the La Voz de Michoacan newspaper reported.
