Update

New Delhi/Singapore, Dec 29 (IANS): The unnamed, unidentified gang-rape victim who became the global face of courage in the face of savage odds died in a Singapore hospital Saturday, halting much of India in its tracks in a rare moment of coalescing concerns that saw the leadership echoing millions in pushing for a full stop in crimes against women.

Her death should not be in vain, was the chorus from President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and civil society, doffing its collective hat to the spirited 23-year-old who propelled an entire nation into a rethink of its societal rules and laws.

At Congress office in Mangalore

Across Karnataka

Across the country, in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Bhopal, Patna, Kolkata, in city after city, the grief found echo. Hundreds gathered at various places demanding an end to crimes such as this.

In the dying days of the year, the young physiotherapy intern had lost her battle for life in a Singapore hospital - 13 days after a trip to see a film with a friend ended in her being brutally tortured and raped by six men in a moving bus.

She was left, stripped and bloody, virtually for dead on that cold Dec 16 night, so grievously injured that her intestines had to be taken out. Now she is dead.

The six accused, including one suspected juvenile, are in jail and all of society in the dock. All six will now face murder charge.

The woman passed away peacefully at 4.45 a.m. with her family and Indian diplomats by her side, Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital said.

"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain," hospital official Kevin Loh said. "We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle."

The ripples were felt in Singapore, where people queued up outside the Indian high commission on Grange Road to pay tribute to the doughty woman from a humble family in India's Uttar Pradesh state.

Questions also arose on why she was shifted to Singapore when her health was so precarious. And the government was the target. For lax policing that led to the incident, and for taking the risky decision to move her.

The body is to be flown back to India Saturday evening in a special aircraft.

As introspection continued on the vulnerability of women, the legal framework to prevent aggravated sexual assaults and ways to stem such crimes, there were tears and protests.

From politicians, celebrities, students and domestic workers. Men and women, everybody was a stakeholder. Many pushed for the death penalty but there were also voices advising against such extreme steps.

The president termed the young woman -- who had told her family she did not want to die -- "a true hero".

"...let us resolve that this death will not be in vain," he added.

The prime minister spoke out in almost the same words, saying that it was up to "us all to ensure that her death will not have been in vain".

The reticent Sonia Gandhi said - twice in two days - that we "pledge that she will get justice and that her fight will not have been in vain…"

Others spoke up too. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan said he was ashamed of being a man. "I promise I will fight with your voice," he said in a tribute to the "brave little girl".

And actress-activist Shabana Azmi said: "Our impotence stares us in the face."

India's civil society agreed. And gathered in their thousands.

Though there was a virtual lockdown in Delhi's city centre, protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar area close by and the anger spilled over. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was booed away.

The bus stop at Munirka, where the woman boarded the bus for that last ill-fated ride, piled up with flowers and scores of posters.

Many people across the country felt that the dead woman could have been one amongst them.

But even in this cathartic moment of collective grief, reports came in of harassment at Jantar Mantar.

And just three days ago, an 18-year-old victim of gang-rape committed suicide in Patiala, Punjab, because police had refused to register a case and humiliated her by asking difficult questions.

This should be India's wake-up moment. But was it?

Delhi Police to invoke murder charges

New Delhi, Dec 29 (PTI): Delhi Police will invoke murder charges against the six men allegedly involved in the gang-rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus after she died in a Singapore hospital 13 days after treatment.

A senior police official said as soon as they get the official report from the hospital, they will slap murder charges against the accused who were nabbed after the December 16 incident.

Police had initially booked the six men under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 201 (destruction of evidence), 365 (kidnapping or abducting), 376 (2)(g) (gang rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 394 (hurting in committing robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The girl had boarded the bus, thinking it to be a legitimate public carriage, from Munirka but was attacked and gang-raped even as her male friend accompanying her tried to protect her. He was also injured in the incident.

Police sources said they are planning to file the charge sheet in a court early next week.

The arrested persons are driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Pavan and Vinay. The sixth person apprehended claimed that he is a minor and police have sought the court’s permission to get a bone check to ascertain his age.

There is no dearth of laws in India . Implementatiion of these laws have become a problem thanks to a corrupt police force. There is lack of confidence in our police The term 'eve teasing' should be replaced by the term 'Sexual harassment'.
Politicians of every party have been responsible for this. The beating up of girls by the members of the so called moral brigade in our own city is a stark reminder of attitudes towards women that prevails in India.

Indeed a sad end to the life of a courageous girl, who wished to recover and fight back against the cruel injustice perpetrated on her by her heartless / immoral / debased attackers. May her brave soul rest in peace. May almighty God give strength & solace to her family members & near n dear ones to bear this irreparable loss. May this shocking incident and many others in recent times wake up the administrators, political class & public for framing 'zero tolerance' policies towards such heinous crimes & various other forms of harrassment / injustice against women in India.

After that hienious crime done to Nirbhaya a 18 year girl has been gang-raped and killed herself. Why we only blame politicians?Where are our brave mothers, our social reformers, our spiritual leaders? It is a national shame that this type of things happen in every corner of our country as we ourselves are not united to fight the root of all these crimes.Let us be united in the name of Nirbhaya and bring changes through proper education to our daughters and sons as well,so that they can live a fearless life. Not only chages in laws and punishing the culprits can bring change in attitude.

there was a time where women in India were respected and not like today so gangraped .. of course rape used to take place since the ancient times but today its really feel very sad to tell like going to market and see where you get one opfer .shame on you men.do you think when its to your own mother or sister is a victim what would you do?

this question is also to our Police also.they ignor such matter and give the mistake to the ladies.my heartfelt sypathies to the family. they lost their daughter not with a sickness but too much testesterone. a familys hope is being in grave burried or burned. what a tragody. how much she suffered all these days and it vain.its apity.I have no words.now the persons who were responsible should suffer at least half of it should be lesson for the future attempters .in public should these men unclothed and women should laugh at them.my prayers are with the deceased.atleast she got release from her pains .

Death sentence is the minimum or the smallest of all the sentence for the culprtis the system can give.Castration & life in Jail is better....whatever the punishment is somethign materialistic here, will not bring back the suffered soul back or the systen into track, death sentences have not stopped murders in India, USA or for that matter in Saudi Arabia also. You cannot stop pervert minds. The problem is more social. Yes, its high time sentences & trials have to be more swift both in criminal matters & civil cases. any culprits or wannabes know the loopholes in the system. In india you can getaway with anything, the root cause for all is corrupt system. If this is not attended first, even if you get eye for an eye & hand for an hand law, one will still have loopholes to escape the system. Unless Govt passes strong anti corruption laws, there is no hope for India. For a example few days back one intellectual Javed Akhthar the script writer for some congress speakers told Arivind Kejriwal during a interaction in NDTV to visit Pakistan once and then think or comment about India's system and feel you are lucky that you are living in India. My respect for Javed Akhtar was lost that very moment for what he is & i couldnt help comparing him more than Digvijay Singh. All he delivered was AICC's stand to IAC, beacause if someone wants to grow, someone wants to move ahead in life or in time, we look for a IDOL which is far exelled in that field ina ve direction not -ve. If India has to move ahead in this times it has to move forward and look for countries like Singapore & Japan.., not bloody Pakistan. Arvind kejriwal dint react nor he was allowed by the channel this way but I wished he said this to JA.
The intention of above example is this that we ourselves are not united in rooting out corruption from our system. We are divided in party & religious lines.Untill then there is no hope. We can only defend & blame the party/caste we represent/support or we oppose the other.

Indeed Very sad news. In Fact what punishment they will get? Big question mark? Maxi 5 to 8 Years years? Or may be they come out earlier, if they have bloody political influence and strong political back ground may be out. Because the politicians they need these kind of criminals. Delhi is the very worst state in the country where crime had been increased from past 3 years, the criminals rooming in front of the police. Those criminals need to tortured to death as even hanging the death will be instantaneous also Delhi not a safe place for any woman.
I have been noticed in Delhi you will get the girl back once raped.
But in Karnataka missing list of girl increasing day by day. What is the story behind these missing girls yet to be ascertained, what happened for those missing girls yet to be ascertained? Whose hand involved behind this yet to be ascertained.

    Big question mark

    Either

    Raped
    Or
    Murdered

I can say this girl is become an Angel and watching the politics happening over her rape and ultimate death in our country from Haven.

I fully agree with Dr.S Kamath, Mumbai. This is not a time to make a politics or blame game. I can read some comments on this forum against ruling party. This is not isolated case happened in one state headed by particular political party.

LET US LEARN LESSON FROM WESTERN COUNTRIES. WHEN SUCH BARBARIC ACT HAPPENED ALL THE POLITICAL PARTIES COME TOGETHER TO CONDEMN THE ACT AND BRING THE CULPRIT TO THE BOOKS.

It is sad that Women are holding highest position in the government office,

    1. Mrs. Sonia Gandi - Chair Person Congress,
    2. Mrs. Sushma Swaraj - Leader of opposition in LS
    3. Mrs Shiela Dixit - Chief Minister Delhi

Still they can't understand the horror or fear of girls leaving in the national capital.

I request all these politicians please Stop once your hunger for political gain and try to punish every individual irrespective of party they belongs or post they hold, who does eve teasing or undue act against the girls/women.

"Amanat" had sincerely expressed her desire to live and see through the trial by death or harsh punishment to these beasts who tormented her. She had the love for life which her parents gave her but was made short by these beasts. All these condolences or crocodile tears by these politicians will not serve. If the politicians have to join the people of this country to secure every woman in this country then they should come with Zero security. UP Chief Minister announced soon after rape that he would give her a job. Shame on the C.M. for such offer and he should spend his party's money (not tax money) to discipline his legislator. Instead of improving the law & order and make the system really work in his state, he makes a job offer of job for a rape. If that is the case then there would be many rapes in this country and he will keep on offering jobs instead of providing justice, security and safety for women. Our leaders have never given up their colonial mind of "We are far superiors from the common man once we are elected". Time for retrospection, for change, for improvement and time for change in elected leaders.

It is a pity that punishment for rape is only 7 years of jail term to the culprits whereas the victim is scarred mentally and physically for life. In India the situation is still worse. The society ostracises the victim as if it is her fault. When this case was being discussed by our colleagues and friends, the men tended to blame the females for wearing provocative clothes. Whereas the ladies argued dress is not the main reason even ladies clothed in sedate outfits like Churidars and sarees have become victims. It is the perverted mindset that results in such crimes against females. What can you expect from a society in the North which has scant respect for ladies, female foeticide, girlchild being ill treated or neglected, not educating the girlchild, preferring the boy over a girl, dowry harrasment, domestic voilence by men. I wish these culprits are given stringent punishment immediately, so that it acts as a deterrent to other people. One fellow is claiming that he is minor, where was this minor claim when he committed this heinous crime? Please gentlemen, instead of blaming the ladies, try to inculcatae some good values and respect for people especially your female compatriates so that we have a better society to live in. May the Soul of the dear departed rest in Peace.

Already this earths population is too much and we dont need these type of people in our society, they will repeat these type of acts again and again.

She was raped and she died.... Another victim in India...!!Women in India are living in fear unfortunately age is no bar these days as a calss of indian men are upto heinous crimes as if they were not born to their mothers, and who treat women without any respect. Will this come to end at any stage?I guess no.. Indian judicial system will never mend itself for the interest of women... beacuse our systmen itsef is biased as there are more men who rule our system. Unless there is change in this equation there will be always discrimination for women.
Men want women to be in close doors, they want to confine them with dress codes, they are asked not to step out in the night they cannot got out to clubs they cannot talk to men....etc etc who has created this, its the men in the name of culture and society. The truth is men want a total control on women and their lifestyle. Unless there is systamic change in our mindsets nothing is going to change. The more we make women weak, men like these will keep taking advantage of women.
People in India fear the cops because they could create more damage than prevention or safeguard them. The previous comissioner of Delhi made a statement that women should be accompanied by men while going out in the night, imagine this is how they think of a women,a weak and helpless person.
Its time we give respect to women, let the law take its cource since we have no other choice left and hope Indian government impliments some serious punishment for such crimes.
Salute to all women who are fighting for their rights, please dont give up...

Why delay in the court cases when millions of people around India demanding severe punishment. Media and Government will go dumb when soda gas type demons go silent. An immediate law is required to end this brutal acts and we all should support for the sake of our own dignity. My heart goes out to Nirbhaya, may God give her family the strength to bear her loss. Our Indian legal system is so pathetic, we would not be surprised if the culprits are acquitted in a year or two due to lack of evidence. Unless we have the laws for rape rewritten these incidents will continue. The common man is not safe, our great leaders are quiet, and who simply read out a pre written speech and fool the public. They would only realise the pain and agony when their daughter./sister/granddaughter go thru this ordeal.

May her Soul RIP. Politicians & National Media show humanitarian concern only in such cases that happen near national Capital or at international level, which give them TRP/publicity at national level. Due to national Media & Political statements Delhi Gang-rape got international publicity, but just two months back similar gory incident took place in Ujire town in DK where 17 year old college girl was gang-raped & brutally murdered. But this case never attracted attention of national (English & Hindi) media. Even local MPs from DK did not raise this subject in parliament. Three days back a pregnant woman was gang-raped in Madhugiri(Tumkur), but national media never mentioned a word about it. A Mangalorean nurse committed suicide in London due to hoax played by Radio Jockeys and our local MP told he would pressurize British govt for thorough investigation. But same MP did not speak single word when it was brought to his notice that a lady clerk at CBI-Bank branch in his home town Mangalore committed suicide due to harassment from higher ups and the Bank’s Zonal Office at Hyderabad had hushed up the case. In Ireland a Pregnant Indian Dentist Savita died as her Irish Doctors refused to perform abortion due to their anti-abortion laws. She was from Belgaum. National Channels made it a subject of Panel-discussion for many days. Even Politicians raised this subject in parliament as it had foreign glamour. But in Same Belgaum city two poor pregnant women died due to apathy of Doctors, and another poor woman’s Male child was stolen in broad day light from govt Hospital. But our National Channels & local MP never spoke single word about it. When a child fell in a borewell near Delhi four years ago, national Channels made a live telecast of rescue operations for all Four days, But just one week later when a child fell in a borewell near Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh no national channel cared to telecast rescue operation even One minute. who said all the Indians are equal?

I wonder what is in store for this country which is being governed by most insensitive politicians who are more bothered about their safety and security and take pride in being surrounded by commandos. They are the ones who are responsible for the disintegration of this great nation. They have been ruling the country for close to over 50 yrs but have pushed the country into more chaotic situations rather than solving some of the more pressing problems of the people. They will have to be taught a lesson by the younger generation of our country who have more sense, maturity, sympathy and empathy. god save this country from the clutches of illiterate, insensitive and amoral politicians.

The ordeal which the humanity is facing today is not because of any party or political nature, but the zeal in human beings which is not controlled by himself or by the fear of God Almighty is causing this horrendous crime. The self respect and respect to human beings has to come first then the sexual devil within us. If we think that we can control this aspect which is within us which is normal, then the world will be peaceful place to live. First of all a man must remember he has come from that same womb for which he has to start respecting his mother and every time he comes across a lady or girl instead of seeing her in lustful eyes he has to think about his mother and pain she has undergone to bring him to this world.
So this has to start from the families and by staging the protests or rally's you cannot get rid of this demons. The men who joined the protest did not had this in their mind at least once in their lift time? This one time has creating these tragedies due to grudge, jealousy or frustration.
so it is the responsibility of each human being to think about this seriously and put this into practice in our life so that any such incidents can be avoided.

It is most unfortunate that the Delhi Gang-rape victim died last night in Singapore. Sending her to Singapore for treatment was purely political decision while Indian Medical experts were quite against this idea. Highly corrupt Vested interests took this decision with ulterior motive. Now-a-days India was most favoured destination for Healthcare among the people of Gulf and other Asian countries, because of which Singapore & Malaysian hospitals were going empty. Now, since this Delhi Gang-rape had drawn international attention, besides arousing people in every nook & corner of India, the Singapore Hospital & Healthcare industry saw a golden opportunity to show Indian Healthcare industry in Poor light and also project themselves as better than India, which could have given sudden boost to their country’s Healthcare and also Tourism sector. Hence it is alleged that this Singapore 'Caucus' of Healthcare/Hospital sector by joining hands with Hotel sector, bribed the correct persons in Indian Govt with huge amount and made them take decision to shift the Victim to Singapore which gave maximum publicity to Singaporen Healthcare sector. Even though Indian doctors are as good as Singapore and also even though Singapore faces dearth of Organ donors for Organ- transplantation to that victim, still vested interests took decision to shift the victim to Singapore. (Organ Donars in India are fifty times more than Singapore and this victim would have got the required organs easily in India for quick transplantation which would have saved here life). This is called making capital out of death too (These most cruel Indian politicians can be called as ‘Kaffan Chor OR Coffin Thieves OR Tomb-diggers’ !) God save such a Nation.

Crimes such as these have been occurring since long and an issue is made for some time and people forget about it. Death sentence is not the answer. Such people should get a dose of their own actions. Their hands should be chopped off to set an example to the others lest the others do the same. People should be made to think twice before doing such horrendous stuff. Death sentence is a very quick end and doesn't do justice. Far more severe actions must be taken. India needs to change! And such changes begin with a change in thought!!!

1.This incident should not be used for political fight BJP or Congress or Versus Delhi Police or AAP
2.Fast Track court should be put in place for this case so that culprits are punished
3.Ascertain the Origin and source of the Criminals which as of now appear to be from UP and Bihar
4.Improve the Literary ,Economic ,Law and Order conditions of those states
5.The administration inclusive of Govt ,Police and Judiciary ,NGO s should all concentrate of Implementation of existing laws that is more important than fresh legal reforms
6.Criminology ,Morality boosting activities should all be improved in India and media should play a Vital role on this that means all those Advertisements on Morality should be Free of Cost specially Television

This unfortunate girl lost her battle forever but raised the mercury of Indian Judicial System once for all. Her death has shamed India. The politicians who consider themself VIPs, Leaders, Lawmakers though they are really our servants in the eye of law will definitely be not bothered of this death. They are more concerned of their power through division by caste and creed. When there rape cases against some Leaders and they do say "Law will take its own course", "Charged but not guilty", will not be ashamed of this "Amanat's death". It is for the 1st time since independence that the youngsters have come out in large numbers. We are nearing the beginning of year 2013 and thereafter 2014, it is time for retrospection as to what kind of leaders we need our country. Do we need criminals, murderers, rapists or leaders who think in terms of caste and creed or do we need leaders of impeccable credit.
