M'lore: Fermai community holds ladies cricket tournament

Mangalore, Feb12: The women’s wing (Sthree Sangatan) of St Antony’s Church, Fermai here, had organized an inter-parish level ‘Velankani Cup’ ladies cricket tournament and tug of war event, in memory of Fr Izidor Norohna, a priest who had served Fermai community in the past. It was held on Sunday February 10.

Before the tournament began, prayer was offered and lamp was lit by dignitaries who were present on the occasion.

Fr Edwin Pinto, headmaster, Alangar school, Denis D’Silva, former ICYM president and political representative, Francis Cutinha, former vice president of Fermai church, Donald Cutinha, vice president of Fermai parish, Henry Crasta, secretary, Sr Mitchell, animator of women’s wing Fermai, participated as chief guests. Fr Robert Crasta, parish priest of Fermai church, presided over the inaugural.

Claire Pinto welcomed the guests by offering bouquets. Fr Edwin Pinto, in his address, stressed that involvement with sports activities is very important, as it helps people to stay healthy and fit. He congratulated the women’s wing of the parish for organizing this wonderful event and providing an opportunity for other women’s groups to come forward and compete in sports activities.

The signal inaugural of the tournament, the dignitaries present released balloons in the air. Fr Edwin Pinto and Fr Robert Crasta inaugurated the newly laid pitch, by playing there for a while.

Fermai, Bondel, Derebail, Tannirbavi, Milagres, Jeppu, and Vamanjoor teams took part in the tournament.
