Shiv Sena opposes move to pardon Sanjay Dutt

Mumbai, Mar 26 (PTI): Shiv Sena today opposed the move to pardon Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt stating that it would send a wrong message to the society.

Speaking in the Legislative Council during a debate on Law and Order scenario in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said, "There should not be a rethink on the Supreme Court's judgement. It will send a wrong message to the society if Dutt is pardoned,".

The Supreme Court, had on March 19, upheld his conviction under Arms Act for illegally possessing prohibited weapons including an AK-56 rifle and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment.

"Leaders from various political parties have demanded that he should be pardoned. But if leniency is shown to Dutt, it would amount to providing political cover to the convicts in this case," she added.

Incidentally, the then Congress MP Sunil Dutt and father of Sanjay, had turned up to Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray to ensure that his actor son got some relief after he was arrested and jailed under the stringent Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act also known as TADA for possessing illegal weapons.

Various film personalities and politicians have stated that the Maharashtra government could make a request to the state governor to pardon Sanjay Dutt.

As per the provisions of the law, the governor has powers to pardon a convict or reduce his punishment.

This is what makes me sick in the stomach to have even heard an insinuation that Sanjay Dutt is going to be pardoned.

How could he get pardoned and then we justify the sentencing of all those ten’s of hundreds of people who were punished under TADA, some life in prison and others even uted if Sanjay Dutt is pardoned.

This is India where the rich and the powerful have a way, for the crime that he planned to commit and the evidence against him he should not have been even give bail.

Why only Sanjay Dutt alone be pardon only because he is a big celebrity?. If law is same for all then all the convicts must be pardoned. Supreme COurt in its judgement in the same case while reversing the punishments of the convicts to life imprisonment had said " THey were just the arrows in the hands of ( Dawood Tiger Memon etc).
THerefore if Sanju Baba is released then all others too have to be released.

Among 150 accused, only Sanjay Dutt had direct links with terrorists and underworld.

He has telephonic talks with Anees Ibrahim and Abu Salem both before and after the Mumbai blasts.

He possessed three AK-56 guns, hand granades and other ammunitions.

Those who transported weapons to Sanjay Dutt's residence and later assisted him in destroying the weapons were convicted under stringent TADA.

Sanjay Dutt was not properly investigated and let off from TADA because of his political connections.

The punishment he got now is very less when compared to the seriousness of his crime.

He should not be pardoned and should undergo the punishment.
