Mangalore, Jan 13: The 17th National Road Safety Week, jointly observed by the district Transport and Police departments came to an end on Thursday. Speaking at the valedictory ceremony held at the Police Guest House district superintendent of police B Dayananda said that co-ordination from various organisations, City Corporation, politicians and public is vital for ensuring safety on roads.
 
"Apart from educating the people, there is also the necessity of looking towards the traffic from environmental point of view. A task force has already been formed in this regard with the co-operation of NGOs," Dayananda stated.
 
He also said that either the Transport or the Police department will conduct a workshop soon by involving all agencies connected with traffic system, and accumulate their plans and suggestions to improve the traffic system of the City.

Presenting a report on the observation of the week, traffic inspector Chandrashekhar said, a total of 3235 cases have been registered throughout the week for violating the traffic rules and a sum of Rs 85,800 penalty has also been collected.
 
MLA N Yogish Bhat, deputy commissioner H V Parshwanath, ASP Lokesh Kumar and Regional Transport Officer Ramesh were present on the occasion.

Ironically, as the Safety Week was on, several road accidents took place in the twin districts with a number of casualties.

Bodies handed over to kin

Karkala: Bodies of three persons, who died in an accident occurred at Mala ghat on national highway No 13 on Wednesday, have been handed over to their kin.

The bodies of school headmaster Prasadimath, van driver Nagaraj and tenth standard student Rekha Doddamani were claimed by their relatives on Wednesday and taken to their native places.
