Mangalore, Jan 16: Keeping the environment clean and green should be the fundamental objective while organizing any kind of large-scale festival or venturing on any industrial projects, said Surathkal MLA J Krishna Palemar.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the three-day beach festival organized as part of the Karavali Utsav 2006 under the aegis of district administration at Panambur Beach on Sunday.

Emphasizing on the responsibility of the newer projects being established in the coastal region, he said, "We do not oppose progress. But industries should mind their basic responsibility of protecting the mother nature," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, inspector general of police (western range) K S Suresh Babu wished that the beach festival will not become a typical government programme, but a celebration of all people.

"Such festivals should be celebrated with united participation of various departments. Kannada and Culture department, for example, arrange a book exhibition here," he said.

He also said he had asked the district police to take strict action against those who pollute the beach areas.
The beach festival was sponsored by the Corporation Bank.

Deputy commissioner H V Parshwanath, Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer A M Kunjappa and district superintendent of police B Dayananda were present.

Beach festival witnessed a ceremonial end with orchestra by Sudesh Bhonsle and troupe. Thousands of people from across the district enjoyed themselves on the serene beach on the last day of the fest.
