Heavy rain causes traffic snarls, waterlogging in Mumbai

MUMBAI, Jul 24 (PTI): Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Wednesday, choking the city with traffic jams due to flooded streets. Normal life has been thrown out of gear due to heavy rain for the second day on Wednesday.

Train services on city's Central and Harbour line are running late by over 20 minutes.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the tide levels are going to be 4.95-metre high at 1:27pm today. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has advised people to stay indoor and to move out of their houses only if necessary.

According to latest reports, it has stopped raining in some areas of the city.

A nearly one km-long stretch of Mumbra bypass on the outskirts of Thane caved in this morning due to incessant rains and has been closed for vehicular traffic, police said.

"Due to heavy rains, around one km-long stretch of the Mumbra bypass has developed huge craters and has been badly damaged. As a precautionary measure, the traffic on either side of the road has been diverted," a police officer said.

However, the closure of the bypass has led to traffic snarls in the internal parts of the city.

The Mumbra bypass on the National Highway 4 (Mumbai-Pune highway) is a crucial link to traffic from Delhi-Ahmedabad-Mumbai (NH3) and Agra-Nashik-Mumbai (NH8) going towards Panvel, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Pune and beyond, and is mostly used by heavy vehicles.

On Tuesday, Mumbai was once again soaked and waterlogged as incessant rains coincided with high tide. The city may not get a respite from the wet spell any time soon as the meteorological department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 60 hours.

Till 8.30pm on Tuesday, Colaba had recorded 84.6mm of rainfall whereas Santa Cruz got 142.2mm. Other areas in the city that received heavier rainfall in 12 hours included Bhan-dup; it topped the list at 151.7mm. Wadala at 140.2 mm, Kurla 133.9mm, Dadar 132.9mm and Bandra 132.6mm followed closely.

The average rainfall received by the island city was 96mm in the 12-hour period. The eastern suburbs recorded 108mm whereas western suburbs received 88mm in the same period. What added to the woes as tide as high as 4.88 metres at 12:48pm, which led to waterlogging.

Mumbai has already seen about 11 days of heavy to very heavy rainfall this season.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, multiple climatic conditions have been contributing to the current spell of downpour. "In the past four days, there have been very strong pressure gradients over the west coast," said V K Rajeev, director of weather forecast at IMD, Mumbai.

    Dear Irene....
What your husband sings in Tulu is
inviting a girl to come under his umbrella....Listen clearly what he sings after 2 or 3 pegs...You may be able to latch on to something
more interesting....! Chief Engineer on an oil tanker...Hmmmmm...it adds up.....
Best Regards Irene M'aam to you and your hubby.
Have a rollicking time in the rains!!

    Many thanks Mr. Bhandarkar,
Next time my husband sings that song, I will twist his ear!- inviting a girl in the umbrella at this age?
Now I know the meaning of that song.
    Have a lovely day

We need the rains and when it rains heavily, it gets flooded, throws all traffic out of gear. Nobody can complain as it is nature. Fortunately I did not read about any fatalities. Thank God for that.

As usual, lovely photos by Rons and daiji!
We live in Mumbai, but love the chaos and water logging like this.
Whenever it rains like this, my husband goes crazy!
He is a Chief Engineer on an oil Tanker.
He purposely gets wet and sings an old song - Barsa barpundu ponne codete bala? balde barsa barpundu athha?
I do not know the meaning of this. But he says it is an old folk song from Mangalore.
Of course, he makes it a point to have 60ml of scotch with soda before he does that!!
Nice day to all of you

The Municipal Corporation with the help of the World Bank should convert Greater Mumbai zone into a cocoon with high raise dykes all round. The future buildings should have high raised platforms around them to protect from flash flood.

Please don’t give reason the population. i.e. All the airlines are having about average 25 people per plane but our AIR INDIA may be having 200 people per plane. Do you think AIR INDIA carry 8 times of other planes. Please note that in India according to the population , Government workers are there and out of those only 25% people work hard and remaining 75% just pass time.

It is the same story every monsoon time.

I remember some time back, some people in DAIJI commented that

"Mumbaites know well to cope with this type of calamities. Neverthless, it is fun for some people"

Is there a way to stop waterlogging in Mumbai, in the future. ?

Don't ask this question to any political parties. Immediately they will make one department " emergency department" and they will recruit their own people to take care of water logging in Mumbai but all the people will be on leave next monsoon.

Flavian, how about the heavy flooding happening in the Gulf region leading to heavy destruction of life and property despite top notch infrastructure in place? Bro, do you know the population density of Mumbai (highest in the world), and that it is made by joining seven islands plus the heavy rains of sometimes 10 inches coinciding with high tides!! In the recent washout that happened it rained 1000 mm in 24 hours which would have without doubt bought any well planned city to its knees!!! But the spirit of Mumbaikars and the never say die attitude keeps its inhabitants moving!!

Due to poor city construction and non planning of drainage are the main reason for this kind of sudden floods. Govt has to wake up now and take immediate actions to clear the traffic.

More than 6 inches of incessant rains coupled with a high tide of nearly 5 meters no amount of infrastructure can avoid flooding as the sea instead of accepting the water spills more on to the land!! BMC had already given the dates and timings of high tides well in advance!! But one has to salute the spirit of Mumbaikars who still move on 24x7!!!
