Delhi Police ad on street children: Rights panel slams

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS): The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) Tuesday asked Delhi Police to explain the "insensitive" portrayal of street children in newspaper advertisements.

The advertisement by police on underprivileged children in an English daily Tuesday read: "Help him learn to chop an onion. Before someone teaches him how to chop a head."

"The commission today (Tuesday) sent a notice to Delhi Police for portraying street children in a derogatory manner," said a members of the commission under the Delhi government.

"It is atrocious. We would want them to go to school rather than work. They been asked to reply in two weeks' time. We have also sent a letter to the lieutenant governor of Delhi to look into the matter," said another member, requesting anonymity.

The commission also asked Delhi Police to not publish the advertisement.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: "We have not received the copy of the notice. Once received, we will reply to the commission."
