Mangalore, Jan 29: A coalation has taken birth here while the future of the Cong-JDS is at stake in the center. The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat will have a Congress-JDS rule Congress candidate Mamtha D S Gatti being elected as the president of the DK Zilla Panchayat for the first term, while JDS candidate Dharanendra Kumar as the vice-president.

In the election held for the posts of president and vice-president on Saturday, Congress and JDS supported each other to share power, thus proving BJP-JDS calculation wrong.

Earlier in the morning, BJP candidate Sushma Janardan, representing Kotekar constituency and Congress candidate Mamtha D S Gatti, representing Kolnad constituency had filed their nominations for the president's post, while BJP candidate Tungappa Bangera representing Sarapady constituency and JDS candidate Dharanendra Kumar representing Naravi constituency had filed their nominations for the vice-president's post.

As the reservation for the president's post had been announced for a lady candidate from general category A, the election of Mamtha Gatti was obvious with Congress and JDS joining their hands. The other two eligible candidates were in BJP. By issuing whip to all the five JDS members, Vasanth Bangera successfully played the king-maker role in the district.

Mamtha D S Gatti, the newly-elected president of DK ZP was the vice-president of Bantwal Taluk Panchayat during the previous term. She is also the general secretary of the district Women Congress and Panemangalore Block Congress. She had won from Kolnad constituency with a difference of 2321 votes. An old student of Canara College, Mangalore, Mamtha had also served as a teacher in the Montepadav High School for a year.
