Security beefed up for NYC Marathon

New York, Aug 3 (IANS): Over 49,000 runners will participate in the New York City Marathon.

In wake of the Boston Marathon bombing in April where two people were killed, the NYC Marathon Nov 3 has increased security efforts, reports Xinhua.

"We want the runners to feel comfortable and we know that they will feel comfortable because of our security measures," executive vice president of New York Road Runners Peter Ciaccia said Friday.

"We will be talking to runners telling them exactly what they need to do to get to certain places in case of emergencies. And behind the scenes, there's the usual security that is in place."

Ciaccia said he was on the scene when the Boston Marathon bombing happened and knows how important now security is to a sporting event like the NYC Marathon.

The NYC Marathon is the world's largest marathon with a record of 47,340 finishers in 2011.
