Pledge against terrorism at mass Ramadan prayer

Malappuram (Ker), Aug 5 (PTI): Braving inclement weather, hundreds of believers converged here for a mass prayer and took a pledge against terrorism and alcoholism to mark the 26th day of the holy month of Ramadan.

The last night prayer meeting, which lasted till this morning, was organised by Malappuram-based Ma'din Academy, a major educational and charity centre.

The Ramadan spiritual conference has been an annual feature for the last few years, attracting faithful from different parts of the state and outside.

The prayer meet held at Swalath Nagar, billed as one of the largest Ramadan congregations of the country, was led by Sayyid Ibrahim Khaleel Al Bukhari, chairman of the academy.

In his message to the congregation, Sayyid Bukhari called upon the faithful to restrain from all activities that smack of terrorism and extremism and strive for unity and social harmony of the country.

He also said believers should act as the ambassadors of peace and tolerance which are the basis of Islam and urged them to use social media for good causes.

"It should be a tool to unite people, not to divide them, a way to love not for hatred. Youth should not become tools in the hands of anti-social elements in society," Bukhari said.

Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musliyar, general secretary of All India Jamiyyathul Ulema and other scholars attended the gathering.

Teach Islamic values and beliefs which instruct the faithful to resist injustice, oppression, pursue justice and Sabr (patience), protect the sacredness of human dignity, and be willing to sacrifice their lives for this cause. Probably the best known example is the 13 years of nonviolent struggle and resistance of the Prophet (PBUH) in the Makkan context. No single violent act or expression was used or even legitimized by the Prophet or his early followers. Muslims were not passive and they did not surrender to their fate, on the contrary they preached their message and faith and confronted nonbelievers on daily basis.
The rejecters of this interpretation of the Islamic nonviolent approach often argue that later Muslims fought many battles and chose to defend themselves, using swords and other weapons. But, it is important to emphasize that when Muslims use such weapons or fought such wars, their intention and guiding Islamic teachings were not a struggle or jihad to kill or physically eliminate the others, on the contrary, the objective was to defend the faith and pursue justice, protect human lives, and accept death as martyrdom in the cause of Allah. Use Nonviolent Resistance Movements to confront the current “Islamophopia” (hatred or prejudice against Muslims) that is sweeping the world.
I wish the Islamic Scholars around India organise more assemblies and conferences to give this massage to the young Muslims in the community. The best weapon is education hence promote modern education and incorporate Islamic Teaching within the syllabus of the Muslim majority education institutions so that they will become progressive, patriotic and practicing Muslim in a modern & multi-religion environment.

Good step in right direction. I hope all religious leaders follow this example. Remember it is religious extremists and politicians are the main culprits who exploit religion.
