Mangalore, Jan 31: The Lourdes Central School, Bijai in the city, which has maintained high standards in education and has been making strides in all fields, celebrated it 7th annual day on Tuesday, January 31 evening.

Catholic Board of Education secretary Fr Wilson D'Souza was the chief guest. Bijai parish priest Fr J P Tauro and Parents-Teachers' Association president Edward Lewis were guests of honour. Principal Grace Noronha welcomed the gathering.

Contrary to the normal routine of having all speeches in the beginning and then holding the entertainment programme right at the end, the latter were presented first. The opening prayer 'Hamri uljhan suljhade Bhagwan' ('Relieve us of our strains) gave an inspirational start to the programme. It was followed by a variety of songs and skits like 'We are the world' and a puppet show. A song-and-dance skit on nature, wild animals and water conservation impressed the audience.

The report of the past year's activities was read out by a boy and a girl student alternately, supported by live representations on the stage as also computer-aided overhead projector displays, which was quite an innovative idea.

The Bijai Church Hall, where the programme was held, was jam-packed with children, parents and well-wishers.
