Rupee slips below 62 against dollar; Sensex tanks over 700 points

Rupee slips to historic low, efforts to stem the fall fail

Mumbai, Aug 16 (IANS): For the first time ever, the Indian rupee slipped below 62 against the dollar Friday despite the government's efforts to stem the currency's fall.

The partially convertible rupee dipped to a new record low of 62.03 against the dollar at inter-bank foreign exchange market here, surpassing its previous record low of 61.80 hit on Aug 6, 2013.

The rupee was quoted at 61.65 at 5.00 p.m. (India time) against its close Wednesday at 61.43.

The depreciation of the rupee came despite a series of measures announced by the government to control current account deficit (CAD), a key reason seen behind the currency market volatility.

The Reserve Bank of India late Wednesday unveiled rules to restrict restrict foreign investments of private individuals and companies and announced additional curbs on gold imports.

"While fully being cognizant of the situation on the current account balance front, which has prompted the RBI to impose cap on outward investment. This would be a dampener to India's global aspirations," said Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

"To stabilise the rupee, it would have been more appropriate to initiate policies which prevent influx of non-essential imports such as coal and iron ore and augment forex inflows."

The impact of rupee depreciation was clearly seen on the key indices of the Indian equities markets which crashed by nearly four percent.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the S&P BSE, which opened at 19,297.11 points, closed at 18,598.18 points, down 769.41 points or 3.97 percent from Wednesday's close at 19,367.59 points.

At one point during the day, the Sensex tanked over 807 points.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also closed Friday's trade at 234.45 points or 4.08 percent down at 5,507.85 points.

The massive selling pressure in the stock markets was also attributed to the high demand for the US currency.

The authorities fear continued fall in the rupee value will exacerbate the current account deficit in the short term, deter investment and further curb growth in Asia's third-largest economy.

    Mr. Poojary
I am least bothered about the prices, progress or economy of other countries. I am concerned about my country and the economy of my country.
As a house wife I know to very well manage the economy of my house.I need not check with every Tom , Dick Or Harry for verification of prices for I keep a good track on the prices of the commodity that I purchase.
ONION is your great topic.Listen during 2nd half of May my neighbor told me that she purchased onion from M'lore Central Market at the rate of Rs. 12/- per KG.On the same day I purchased Onion from the near by Market at the rate of RS.18/-. No regret for the difference Amt. of Rs. 6/- per KG. for I saved my time, energy and the conveyance expenditure.Next I purchased onion on July 8th in Mangalore at the rate of RS.28/-.On 11th of July I purchased onion in Bangalore at the rate of Rs.40/- per KG.Is this not a rainy season.Do you have a special rainy season in Bangalore. If at all you have purchased onion at the rate of RS. 70/- during this period and you have enough of proof you may proceed against the vendor through appropriate channel.
Talking about tax? Instead of keeping an account of the scams, keep an account of the tax that you pay and check whether accurate figure of the Income that you earn is provided to the authorities concerned.

    Dear Joseph F Gonsalves
Running a country is similar to running a company. if you dont produce anything, if you dont have skilled people , machinery etc, you are going to loose out to other companies. In our country Hundreds of major infrastructure projects have stalled. No initiative has been taken to improve manufacturing sector. Please note that there is robust demand and Billions of dollars worth of goods are being Imported. For Example We import mobile phone components , dolls crockery everything from china because goods manufactured in India are not cost effective due to lack of power and essential infrastructure. Irony is Large portion of our youth is unemployed. This has youth lead to unrest in the country Eg Naxalism. If you ask why? the problem is that there is no leadership .The main problem here is that the prime ministers job is not a economists job. It demands a high level of political skill. Usually in in any country Top man would have come from with high level talent in politics. Remember some among us only can run fast. Even if somebody takes me to olympic race i can not perform. There is a major flaw in congress party ,they are not getting good political talent. They are getting free votes from minority and they employ people from their family who are not competent enough to run in the olympics of politics. If this congress continues like this ,best scenario we can hope to achieve is avoiding a civil war.
    May god bless our country!.
My appeal to everybody please include economic issues in discussion. Dont give your vote free . Dont reward non performance. Rulers of poor countries also become very rich.
I am suggesting that when we are doing our voting business get the best deal from the service providers!.

What is the value of a Japanese Yen tell me.
What is the value of Iranian currency?
What is the value of Italian currency Lira

The world economies itself is in shambles.
We are far, far better than other world countries economy and this was possible only because of sustaining stable economy by Dr. Manmohan Singhji & Mr. Chidambaramji.

Believe it or not if the government makes taxation very strict and checks the income of a person individually in their houses, can the citizens bear this. (People are storing gold in their houses
    Poor as well as rich.

    1) So many commentators blaming about corruption. Are you not paying under the table to approve your house plan?
    2) Are you not paying under the table black and white before registering your apartment?
3)How many have BPL cards above stipulated income limit.
    4) Go to taluk office the real estate people have made a habit for government workers. They, the real estate people give money and accomplish their work very speedily. Those don't pay the money go there, come tomorrow, and the work is still lingering.
    5) I am not blaming the politicians. It is the citizens who are daily involved in corruption.
AND THE SAME CITIZENS ARE BLAMING THE POLITICIANS.

OVER ALL, EVERY CITIZEN ARE INVOLVED IN ONE OR THE OTHER CORRUPTION EXCEPT A VERY MINUTE CITIZENS LIVE UP-TO THEIR LEVEL STATUS W/O CORRUPTION.

Joseph, Italy does not use Lira anymore, they are a part of the euro block.

Iran is a banana republic that has been under severe UN , US and european sanctions. Their current would not be a good yardstick to measure against.

Japan has a current account surplus and not deficit. The Japanese debt is held by insiders, so they have little threat to their economy externally. The weak yen helps their exports.

India has twin problems : 1. Inflation 2. Current account deficit. You cannot solve one without solving another.

Yet their inflation rate is higher than India.

Our Economy is now the 4th largest economy in the world even after world wide nations financial positions are weakened. Last year India didn't had rains and there was drought in many states. Crop failure resulted in inflation.

    Joseph,

The inflation rate in Saudi Arabia was 3.7% in the month of July 2013. In India, the annual real inflation ( not the core inflation as measured by the government ) as hovered well over 14% in the past 5 years.

Also, the claims that Indian economy is the 4th largest is incorrect. By nominal GDP, India has the 9th largest, and only when adjusted to purchase power parity we can claim to be the 4th largest economy. However, it is not the GDP but GDP per capita that matters. India's GDP per capita is 126th in the world. We are even below the likes of Swaziland, Morocco , Bhutan and Sri Lanka. We have a long way to go before we become a first world economy.

We have a 174 billion dollar repayment to IMF due in May 2014. I don't know how bleak the situation will look like then. Hiring Raguram Rajan as the new RBI chief is a step in the right direction, but he needs to be given freedom in policies to implement corrective measures, going by our history, i don't see that happening.

The main reason internationally is the oil price increase 10 dollar in 1984 to 116 in 2009plus the coming 4 years. the increase is not BJP/Congress fault. due to import of petrol/crude we have to repay a large amount of money in dollar. also our export/production of cultivation and vegetables are reducing due to the farmers are changing to white colour jobs. to reduce this gap fisherman to go for fishing, farmers are to do their jobs and all will creat the local production improve the locale prices. more vegetable means vegetable price will come down. more people have to do production work as before we had in every field. due to globlisation every ones salary increased accordingly production no increased. these are affecting the price increase and repayments of import.Even furniture items are importing from foreign country and paying in dollar like that all luxery items. before these imports are restriced and local products are marked saving a lot of re-payments. when we depend on other products we have to pay accordingly and daily the deficit increasing. these are the main reason for the imbalance and who ever rule the country have to bear in mind. every one accuse each other and say they can rule better. in that sense it is better to stay with known devils than the others. mean other devil will do extreme which no body does not know. any how ending up with old monkey know better tricks and those who does not have experience will learn the things at our extra cost and by the time we loose more.

No doubt Congress is losing control of the situation. But, you cannot blame them alone. All other parties are equally to blame for the current situation. BJP needs to take most of the blame because they are not allowing both the houses to run smoothly.
Old sins committed by BJP during their tenure are hitting us badly. Releasing terrorists and accompaning them to Khandar has created more violation at the border. BJP also is in the forefront creating communal disturbance in various states especially where they have either lost the election or in opposition. Their style of functioning is to create problem and blame the current Government and win the goodwill of people by spreading lies vis-a-vis misguidance.

Having said this, let me not hesitate in saying the scandals, corruption, price rise and bad policies have made Congress less favourable. Action, negligence, ignorance and displaying our weakness to Pakistan has made the people angry - how many Jawans are losing life or getting injured every day. I am confused do not know whom to vote.

when our ministers busy in making money and waste time in their vested interests how can one expect that our country will become strong in economy?. Today we hardly find any ministers working for our country or for the people, instead find them working for their family and children. So if we do not wake up and let this trend continue that day is not so far rupee slips below 100 against dollar.

The government announced capital controls yesterday and this was an expected result. Capital controls reeks of a pre-1991 India. In a free market capitalism, such regulations will further dent the confidence of foreign investors. Need of the hour is to reduce the corporate taxation, massively simplify the tax code, invest on infrastructure and not entitlements, and start reducing the distribution bottlenecks which can help reduce the food inflation.

In 4 years rice price got doubled. Onion price quadrupled.

But our salary did not double. For common man it is difficult to lead life. If you have looted money, then it is possible..

    Mr. Poojary,
    Hello, Hello.
In 4 years rice price got doubled. What about your Assets? If agricultural lands are sold and buildings touching sky are constructed will there be any production of rice? Onion price Quadruple - is a common feature during rainy season.Once the rain stops Onion will be available in plenty and the price will fall back to the price that prevailed prior to the rainy season.
For common man difficult to lead life. But the Common Man (CM of Gujarath)gives challenging speeches on Developments in his states. That means he and his people can afford to purchase rice and onion at any cost.Is it because they have looted money.

Rupee will hit century before May 2014.

Manmohan Singh and Sonia are batting like Chris Gayle and Viraat Kohli..

They are supported by Kalmadi, Chidambaram, Robber Vadra, A Raja, Rahul, Bansal, Divijay Singh etc.

There were lots of free hits in the innings such as 2G, CWG, Coalgate, DLF, Railway Bribe etc etc...
