Mangalore, Feb 16: The New Mangalore Port has handled a record quantity of 28,391 tonnes of iron ore fines on Wednesday February 16.

With this the port has set a new record breaking the old record of handling the previous record of 27,827 set on December 14,2004.

A record of 11061 tonnes of iron fines were handled during the second shift on Wednesday making it also one of the highest to be handled in a single shift.

So far the port has handled 47.05 lac tonnes of iron ore in this year.

The sources said that with the completion of the Hassan-Mangalore railway line and the commissioning of the newly constructed deep draft multi-purpose general cargo berth, the iron ore and bulk cargo traffic is expected to go up further in the coming months.
