Mysore, Feb. 27: Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Mysore Prof. D. Javaregowda (Dejagow) has declined the award given by Karnataka Translation Akademi.
"It was appropriate to give the award to other persons rather than to me because I had worked for the establishment of the Akademi," he said citing reason for declining the award.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the veteran litterateur remarked: "I too have contributed my mite in creating the Akademi. Therefore, instead of selecting me for its award, it is better to select others deserving the same. Of course, I don't have any bitter feeling about my being nominated for the award. I am declining the award in all humility. On the other hand, it has saddened me because Kannada language has not been given the classical language status by the Union Government."
The Translation Akademi had announced on Friday five names for the award, first time after its creation in 2004. The award consists of Rs. 10,000 in cash, a certificate and a plaque.
