Panaji, Mar 1: National Science Day was observed in Goa with various institutions organizing related programmes for the day. Many institutes had kept their offices and laboratories open for public viewing giving them glimpse of their scientific work.

The institutions including Dona Paula-based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research (NCAOR) in Vasco, Goa Science Centre and the Goa Astronomical Observatory held various programmes on the occasion.

Goa University Vice-Chancellor delivered the C V Raman memorial lecture on 'Contributions of Sir C V Raman' at the Goa Science Centre, which also conducted quiz competitions for students.

The university threw open all its departments to the public to explain the progress they achieved, particularly in the field of scientific research.

It has also planned to conduct drawing and elocution competitions for high school students, besides inviting them to the departmental laboratories to have the feel of science.

The ice-core laboratory in the NCAOR, which mimics the sub-zero Antarctica climate was the main attraction for public.

At NCAOR, the scientists have been studying the past climates with the help of various details brought by brought by the expedition teams from the icy continent, for preparing future climate models.

They are also studying the significance and application of genes isolated.
