Mangalore, Apr 5: The life of an infant suffering from a condition known as ‘exomphalos major’ was saved by a team of doctors from Yenepoya Medical College.
The baby girl born to Ismail and Khadeejumma of Santosh Nagar in Deralakatte in Munoor near had a huge protraction on the abdomen.
The child weighing 2.2 kgs was normal in other aspects. The doctors referred the child to the Yenepoya hospital here.
The doctors at the department of pediatrics diagnosed it as a case of ‘exomphalos major,’ a rare case of defective abdominal wall and the liver with a part of bowel loops protruding outside the abdomen. The kid also had associated cardio-vascular anomalies and was sepsis, the mortality rate in such cases was upto 80 per cent.
Dr Jude Joseph and his team comprising pediatrician Dr Hemanth and the anesthetist Prof S Padmanabha operated the ten-day old child on March 22 and attained success. During the surgery, the contents were reduced into the proper abdominal cavity.
The baby did not require postoperative ventilator and is monitored at the neonatal intensive care unit, under the supervision of the pediatric department head, Prof Vijayadeva.
