Mangalore, Apr 20: Sunil Vincent (23) of Kolambe, accused along with Roshan Noel D'Souza of Adkabare of killing Anna Monis of Bajpe-Adkabare, has been awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 11,000 by a court here.
The main accused Roshan Noel D'Souza had died of illness while in custody some time ago.
The duo had been chargesheeted with the murder by strangling Anna Monis in broad dayligh at her house on June 26, 2003 while she was alone in her house. They obtained easy entry as Roshan Noel was an acquaintance. They robbed the house of gold jewellery of 21 sovereign worth and in a cover-up operation had packed her body in a jute bag and dumped in a nearby well. Then they escaped to Bangalore.
Before leaving they had locked the door. The children returning from school were stranded outside the house and were tended by neighbours who soon came to know of the murder. Anna's husband who was working abroad arrived home at the same time on scheduled leave.
The then inspector of Panambur, Subhaschandra, had investigated the case with diligence. The Bajpe police tracked down the culprits and brought them to Mangalore. The jewellery had also been seized from them. While being brought to Mangalore, Roshan Noel had attempted suicide by piercing himself with glass shards.
He later died, according to the police of terminal illness, while serving judicial custody.
The case had agitated the public and generated a lot of interest, on the subject of safety of women with no male presence in rural areas as also the involvement of youth in crime.
