Patient dies after ambulance held up for using red beacon

Srinagar, Dec 11 (PTI) : An 80-year-old heart patient died due to delay in medical aid after the ambulance carrying him was allegedly held up for 30 minutes by a court officer for using a red beacon here.

Describing the incident as "bloody mindlessness", Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he will take up the matter with the state High Court.

The family of Abdul Rehman Dar alleged that traffic cops stopped the ambulance at Seelu in Sopore area over the use of red beacon and siren yesterday while he was being taken to SKIMS hospital Srinagar from north Kashmir after suffering a heart attack.

Dar, a resident of Handwara, breathed his last at the hospital soon after his arrival, the family said claiming that "inordinate delay had led to his death".

The cops had stopped the ambulance asking the driver to remove the red beacon and siren in view of the Supreme Court ruling on the matter yesterday.

Reacting to media reports, Omar sought a report from Inspector General of Police about the incident and later took to micro-blogging site Twitter.com promising to take up the matter with the High Court as the ambulance was not stopped by police but by a mobile magistrate.

"The ambulance was not stopped by police but by mobile magistrate who is a court officer. Will be formally taking up with High Court," he said.

"Just saw the @ibnlive piece about the ambulance stopped because of a siren. Cannot believe the sheer bloody mindlessness of that action," Omar had said earlier.

In Dubai I have not seen any minister or member of rulers family are using any red beacon, siren on their vehicle, neither they are using security when they go out. But it is only for Fire brigade, Police and Ambulances. The consulate officials were given a separate number plate, but in India even it is given for some small official. These people are wanting Security, siren, red beacon etc on public money to show their prestige.

I think the ambulance driver should have neglected the KILLER OFFICER and rush the patient to the nearest hospital to save his life.

IT IS REALLY EMBARASSING ABOUT THE COURT RULING.
IS THIS BE CALLED HUMANITY BASED DEMOCRACY? HOW A COURT CAN NEGLECT EMERGENCIES AND WHAT IS THE MEANING OF AMBULANCE. BEING SO CALLED LAWMAKERS WHY OUR PEOPLE REPS. ARE SILENT ON SUCH INDECENT COURT RULINGS WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN OBJECTED BY MLAS IMMEDIATELY.

Some time our people overstepping their jurisdiction at their will because I feel we got the excess freedom which is detrimental to all developing Nations. I hope that this Court Official will not end up in a similar situation when he falls sick and transported through any Ambulance stopped for the red beacon light

I love India, because India is a great country. They will stop using a red beacon / siren on ambulance and they will allow our third class citizen's (MLA/MP/Government officials) using a red beacon / siren on their vehicle....They will catch and punish/send them jail for some pity pick pockets and they will leave free some big fraudsters, corrupt, cheaters.... Great India.
