Baghdad, Dec 20 (IANS): At least 10 people were killed Friday and 15 others injured in attacks in Iraq, police said.

At least nine people were killed and 11 others injured when two bombs went off in a livestock market in Tuz Khurmato city, 170 km north of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

Violence is common in the ethnically mixed city of Tuz Khurmato, part of the disputed area claimed by the Kurds, the Arabs, and the Turkomans. The Kurds want to incorporate the area on the edge of the Kurdistan region into their territory.

A policeman was also killed and four members of the Sahwa militia were injured in two separate attacks in Sharqat area, 260 km north of Baghdad, the police source added.

The Sahwa militia, also known as the Awakening Council, consists of armed groups, including some powerful Sunni insurgent groups, who turned their guns against the Al Qaeda network after the latter exercised indiscriminate killings against both Shiite and Sunni Muslim communities.

Friday's attacks came one day after at least 46 people were killed and 100 others injured in attacks across the country, including a wave of bombings against Shia pilgrims.

Many Iraqis are worried about a resurgence of violence and ethnic and sectarian strife that nearly tore the country apart a few years ago.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, 8,109 Iraqis were killed in the country from January to November this year.
