AAP says it will form government in Delhi, Kejriwal to be CM

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS): AAP founder leader Arvind Kejriwal was Monday set to be Delhi's chief minister after announcing that his party will form a government with Congress backing to end a fortnight-long deadlock.

Kejriwal, 45, met Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and staked his claim to assume office. Without specifying a date, he said he and his ministers would take oath at the sprawling Ramlila Maidan in the heart of Delhi.

The Ramlila ground is where Gandhian Anna Hazare's 12-day fast in 2011 for a Jan Lokpal triggered mass solidarity protests across India. Kejriwal and Hazare were together then but have since fallen out.

A confident Kejriwal later asserted that the AAP, which only 28 seats in the 70-member assembly, had the legislative majority to rule Delhi.

"We are in a majority and we will form the government," he said, without specifically mentioning the critical support of the eight Congress legislators. "Let the opposition pass a no confidence motion."

He said he told Jung that "we are ready to form the government".

And quick to get down to business, Kejriwal conducted a "training session" for his 27 fellow legislators, some of whom had never had a brush with politics until the AAP decided to contest elections.

Delhi's former chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who lost to Kejriwal by over 25,000 votes, gave her "best wishes" to the AAP, saying: "We know the promises (they made) are difficult to fulfil."

The promises include drastically slashing power tariff and providing 700 litres of water daily to all households.

The Lt Governor invited the AAP to try form a government after the Bharatiya Janata Party, which finished with 31 seats, declined to do so as it lacked majority support.

The Congress, in order to slight the BJP, announced that its eight legislators would prop up the AAP. The AAP decided to seek people's views on whether or not it should take support from the Congress.

That led to a five-day referendum where people were asked to say 'yes' or 'no'. On Monday, Kejriwal announced that an overwhelming majority had given their thumbs up to an AAP government.

"Majority of the people wanted us to form the government," he said.

An engineer by training and a former Indian Revenue Service officer whose social activism won him the Ramon Magsaysay award, Kejriwal didn't say who will be the new chief minister.

But party leader Manish Sisodia declared that the top post would go to Kejriwal, who led the one-year-old AAP to a dream debut in the election in which the Congress was routed.

"We fought the elections under his leadership, and all the MLAs had selected him as the chief minister candidate," said Sisodia, who is widely tipped to become a minister.

Sisodia added that of the hundreds of thousands who responded to the AAP referendum, around 157,000 people in Delhi, or 74 percent of those who took part in the exercise in the capital, wanted the party to take power.

Besides soliciting responses on the social media and through SMS, the AAP held some 280 public meetings across Delhi. In 257 of them, the majority voted for an AAP government, he said.

The BJP Monday came out strongly against the AAP, accusing it of joining hands with the "corrupt Congress".

Party leader Harsh Vardhan, who could have been the chief minister had the party formed a government, said: "This is a betrayal of the wishes of the people of Delhi.

"The AAP fought the election on the anti-corruption plank, and now they have taken support from a party that has been completely rejected by the people of Delhi. This proves that AAP is hungry for power," he said.

Kejriwal is playing opportunistic politics..How can a party so new dilutes its Ideologies??A party and its leader who said that no matter what happens he will not support and not take support from either BJP or Congress. Before elections Kejriwal used to talk about corruption by congress party and its ex CM Sheila Dixit.I dont understand how can he now go against her and all the corruption charges against her party. What will happen to the CWG corruption charges that he was Talking about??

BJP has played it safe and has done the right thing. It just needed a handful of MLA's (after having support from 1 independent and 1 SAD mla)it has done the right thing by sitting in the opposition.
The biggest loser will be congress ..Imagine a situation where AAP does well and performs then congress will be the biggest losers because no one will vote for it the next time around. The main contest will be between AAP and BJP.

Now coming to AAP.It has a group of people who are Naxal sympathizers and leftist people that could be a dangerous combination for India. Just 2 days back there was a leader of AAP who said Kashmir should be given to Pakistan via a referendum. The same was said by another AAP leader Shanthi Bushan. This stupid policy No Indian will tolerate. Kejriwal got his recognition through Anna and he dumped Anna midway. If you saw Anna's reaction today on TV on how AAP will form a government with the help of congress he had nothing to say..Imagine having fought against a party saying it was corrupt and now having the same party as your partner to form a government. Is it not a shame???
Just when I am typing this I hear Mrs. Dixit say that the support will be performance based and not unconditional as earlier suggested by the congress. Wow what a U turn..Just a week ago they sent unconditional letters of support to the Lt.Governor and now in a week they have changed their stand.
Congress has hit its own leg with a hammer. Thanks Kejri for providing backdoor entry to Cong

    @ Anand karkal,
Don't say, BJP wanted to give AAP a test, so BJP decided to sit in opposition. In reality, BJP didn't have guts to form Govt, because of false/fake promises they made to voters before election. They were sure, those promises were impossible to achieve & during next LS election campaign, they will not be able to show their faces to voters & will lose badly. So, BJP just played it safe, keeping LS election in mind. Otherwise they wouldn't have given up.

Congress wants to hide out the misdeeds of Shiela, her MLAS, Ministers, Robber Vadra, RG, Sonia and several other central ministers. That is why they support AAP now. Because if the re-election happens, BJP will form the govt in Delhi, which is not favorable for congis.

Kejriwal should not bend to any such forces from congis. The moment it happens it is better to break the alliance and go for a fresh mandate. Otherwise AAP will lose its credibility.

    Frank,
I think you are in shock of Congress party's nosedive. You have to relaize that Sheila Dixit has lost her battle and is not even MLA. Further AAP came to power solely on the agenda of opposing Congress Ideology and the governance.
However I do support Kejriwal as Deli CM, but it is a pity that he has to gt the support from the party which he opposed for everything.
So time alone will tell whether or not he can fulfill the election promises he made!

    Dear Pastor Frank.
BJP rejected in forming the govt. and put the ball in AAP court.

Sheila Dixit will wait for the opportunity to pull AAP down as Aravind Krejwal had won election against Sheila Dixit.

The person within Congress who had supported AAP is Rahul Gandhi. Sheila Dixit is finished.

We wish many more people like Aravind Krejwal will arise in India. I am really happy when AAP won election in Delhi. The arrogance of Congress and BJP made them, to bite the dust.
