Singapore court withdraws charges against three Indians

Singapore, Dec 23 (IANS): A Singapore court Monday dropped charges of rioting against three Indians.

K. Thirunavukkarasu, G. Ashok Kumar and A. Velmurugan received a discharge amounting to an acquittal, the Straits Times newspaper reported.

The case against seven other alleged rioters was also heard Monday. The prosecution urged the court not to give them bail, citing public safety concerns, the daily said.

But the court granted bail to the defendants.

When on bail, the accused must report to investigating officers once a week and will not be allowed to visit areas in Little India covered by the alcohol ban and where the rioting took place Dec 8.

Rioting broke out in Little India atter a motorist ran over an Indian worker, leading to unprecedented violence that left many injured. Hundreds of South Asian workers gather in Little India during weekends.
