Nokia adds 1,200 apps, launches second season of app reality show


New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS): Mobile handset apps have become an inseparable part of modern day lives -- and to leverage this reality, handset maker Nokia has added 1,200 apps on the Windows Phone store and launched the second season of ‘Nokia Lumia-Your Wish is My App’ campaign, P. Balaji, managing director, Nokia India said here Friday.

“In the first season of the campaign, which is a reality television show, we have got some 38,000 app ideas. It is seven times more than our expectation. We have shown top 2,000 ideas to our developers and now 1,200 ideas are converted into apps, which are now live. Around 300 more will be live by February,” he told IANS.

The winner app for the first campaign is related to women's protection. ‘Nokia Lumia-Your Wish is My App’ is the app reality TV show the handset maker is doing with NDTV.

He confirmed that these apps can also be used by others handset companies, which are on Windows operating system.

There are around 160 million internet users in India and out of that 130 million are using it on mobile phones as well. There are around 200 million handset purchases every year.

According to a study by Strategy Analytics, there will be 68 million smartphone users by 2015, who will require more apps.

Balaji said Nokia nurtures around 200 app developers with more than 1 million downloads for their apps.

It has started taking app idea applications from people effective Friday and it will continue till February. In March, the applications will be screened and in April the whole exercise will be televised as a reality show.

Nokia will also ask for innovative ideas during Social Media Week 2014, which is scheduled to take place Feb 17-21 in Bangalore, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Lagos, Milan, New York and Tokyo, Vishal Gondal, tech entrepreneur, said.
