Srinagar, May 21: A rally organized by the Youth Congress to mark the 15th death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar was attacked by terrorists on Sunday afternoon.

The terrorists hurled grenades and fired bullets into the crowd, killing two policemen and five civilians and wounding at least 22 others before the two attackers were killed, officials said.

Local news agency in Srinagar said that Al-Mansoorian and Lashkar-e-Toiba have claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The Inspector General of Police, Srinagar, K Rajendra and Deputy Superintendent of Police Faizal Ahmad were also injured in the gun battle.

Rajendra received bullet injuries in his foot.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Farooq Ahmad, said that after an intense gun battle the other terrorist was also killed. He added that all the civilians present inside the park were evacuated safely.

Police couldn't immediately say how many civilians were injured, but a doctor at a nearby hospital said he had received at least 10 wounded.

Mohammed Sayeed, a Congress Party worker, said he saw "more than a dozen people hit by bullets" as he fled the scene.

According to an eyewitness there were at least two terrorists inside the park where nearly 2,000 had assembled for the rally.

Gunshots and explosions sparked panic in the entire city including Lal Chowk, the summer capital's business hub.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi condemned the terror attack and condoled the death of the victims.
